Position Summary

Reporting to the Vice Provost for Academic Innovation, the Business Manager provides oversight for the fiscal and administrative operations of the Academic Development and Innovation (ADI) portfolio. Responsible for comprehensive financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, reporting, compliance, and business operations across ADI's diverse portfolio of academic innovation initiatives. The incumbent oversees financial operations supporting the Center for Teaching and Learning Innovation, the Center for Educational Research and Analytics, Office of Program Development, Apple-MSU Partnership Programs, and other emerging initiatives within ADI. Responsibilities also include management of General Business Operations associated with our support for sponsored programs, pre- and post-award grant administration, customer service for non-credit participants, revenue-generating educational activities, administration of non-credit and workforce-aligned programs, e-commerce operations, and general business operations for intellectual property management and shared-revenue models with academic units. This position ensures sound general business operations, process ownership, financial stewardship, regulatory compliance, operational effectiveness, and the process infrastructure necessary to support ADI's strategic priorities, innovation agenda, and long-term organizational growth. 

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Accounting or Finance with relevant course work in Computer Science; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in professional financial statement preparation including cost accounting or auditing or registration as a Certified Public Accountant; may require experience in word processing, office management, spreadsheet, and accounting software; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Research Administrator (CRA), Project Management Professional (PMP), or other relevant professional certification. 

  • Experience with university enterprise financial systems (e.g., SAP, Kuali Financial Systems, Workday, or similar platforms). 

  • Demonstrated experience managing sponsored project finances, multiple funding sources, complex budgets, and revenue-generating programs; 

  • Experience interpreting and applying financial policies, regulations, and compliance requirements. 

  • Experience supporting non-credit educational programs, continuing education operations, auxiliary enterprises, or cost-recovery business models. 

  • Demonstrated ability to analyze complex financial data and communicate recommendations effectively to diverse stakeholders. 

  • Knowledge of federal regulations governing sponsored programs, including Uniform Guidance (2 CFR 200). 

  • Strong organizational, analytical, problem-solving, and process improvement skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities in a dynamic and evolving environment.
  • Experience within higher education, government, or similarly large and complex organizations.

Special Instructions

Unit requires some regularly scheduled time in-office, on-campus. This is NOT a fully remote position.
