Position Summary

The Soybean Breeding and Genetics Program at Michigan State University is seeking a highly motivated individual to work as a member of the Soybean Breeding and Genetics Program. This position will support Michigan Soybean Performance Trials and the soybean variety development efforts through management of soybean research fields and field-based research.

Job Responsibilities will include:

  • Preparation, planting, and harvesting the Soybean Performance Trials and soybean breeding nurseries and research plots.
  • Seasonal field plot maintenance, greenhouse assistance, data collection, seed sample processing and seed inventory 
  • Management of hourly student employees

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Plant Breeding, Genetics, Agronomy, Plant Pathology or related field; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in standard laboratory procedures and safety requirements and performing analytical and research techniques in an area related to research being performed; requires familiarity with Microsoft Suite of products/software; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 

Desired Qualifications

  • M.S.  in Plant Breeding, Genetics, Agronomy, Plant Pathology or related field
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated proficiency in operating field research implements
  • Experience in operating and maintaining field research equipment including but not limited to tractors, sprayers, planters, and combines
  • Familiarity with field research methodologies used in plant breeding

Summary of Physical Demands

Lifting up to 50lb of the following from floor/waist height (1 hour average)

Bags of seed, supplies, equipment, plant/soil samples

Seed and chemical containers into truck

Cchemical Jugs for sprayer

Carrying up to 50lb of the following a distance of 10 - 20 Feet 

Bags of seed, supplies, equipment, plant/soil samples

Seed and chemical containers into truck

Chemical Jugs for sprayer
