Position Summary
Starting pay is $22.86 per hour. Regular, in-person attendance is required to meet business and customer needs.
This position performs a wide variety of logistical support duties, including, but not limited to, moving commercial office furniture and equipment within and between buildings, including disassembling and reassembling items as necessary. Responsibilities include setting up and taking down equipment for athletic events, livestock shows, conferences, dances, lectures, concerts, and other special events, as well as setting up and removing staging, displays, bleacher seating, stalls, tables, and both rigid and folding chairs. The position operates University motor vehicles and equipment, including forklifts, vans, tandem trailers, tractors, and trucks, to transport furniture, equipment, and display materials both on and off campus. Duties also include assembling new and used furniture such as desks, cabinets, chairs, shelving, tables, and modular furniture systems, and delivering salt to University departments.
This position may lead other employees engaged in moving office furniture and equipment and in setting up and taking down staging, seating, and equipment for spectator events. The incumbent may instruct assigned support employees in work methods and techniques and provide assistance to clients during events. Responsibilities also include exercising extreme care and caution when handling University property, communicating with campus customers regarding job details and work orders, and driving a University vehicle as required to perform the duties of this classification. The position provides customer service to the MSU community and the public and responds to customer inquiries, comments, and concerns, or informs supervisory staff of complaints, feedback, and/or unmet service needs.
Job responsibilities are as follows:
60%: Perform the delivery, movement, installation, assembly, disassembly, and reassembly of commercial office furniture, classroom furniture, tables, chairs, shelving, signs, staging, displays, bleachers, artwork, water softener salt, and various other materials and equipment. Operate moving carts and other logistical equipment and use common hand tools to facilitate operational, relocation, and event-support activities.
15%: Lead and oversee employees engaged in set-up operations, including providing instruction on work methods and techniques. Support clients during events and serve as a point of contact for campus customers regarding job details and service requests. Handle University property with extreme care and attention to detail. Respond to customer comments and concerns and notify supervisory staff of complaints and/or unmet service needs.
15%: Transport furniture, supplies, materials, tools, and equipment by loading, securing, and operating University vehicles. Operate and conduct basic maintenance of University vehicles and forklifts to support campus operations. Maintain building entrances and walkways by performing snow removal and related duties, including sanding, salting, and sweeping, to ensure safe access.
10%: Correspondence through email, training, meetings and professional development.

Minimum Requirements
- Completion of high school education or an equivalent combination of education and experience is necessary;
- Working knowledge and skill in the operation of forklifts, dollies, and other material handling equipment is necessary;
- Demonstrated ability to read and interpret furniture blueprints, instructions and manuals;
- Working knowledge and ability of using common hand tools associated with furniture installation;
- Possession or attainment of an MSU Forklift Operator's permit prior to completion of applicable probation or trial period;
- One-year satisfactory work experience as a Laborer III or an equivalent combination of training and experience in set up work is necessary;
- Possession of a valid Michigan vehicle operator license(s) is necessary; must drive a University vehicle and meet MSU standards for safe driving;
- Steady lifting of over 75 pounds is required;
- Ability to perform strenuous physical labor.
Desired Qualifications
Two years year experience in furniture assembly or moving company. Two years experience in loading, unloading, and transporting materials, tools, equipment and furniture.
A lifelong learner and problem solver with strong technical skills and communication skills, who focuses on innovative solutions aligned with University goals.
