Working/Functional Title
Assistant/Associate/Full Professor Tenure System
Position Summary
The College of Engineering at Michigan State University (MSU) invites applications for a tenure-system faculty position in the Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME) in scientific machine learning (SciML) and computational modeling of complex multiphysics and multiscale systems. We encourage applications for appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor and will consider exceptional candidates for appointment at the rank of Associate or (Full) Professor.
This position offers an exceptional opportunity to develop a research program aligned with TEMPEST, an NSF Science and Technology Center led by MSU that brings together researchers from universities, national laboratories, and industry partners to tackle complex fluid and plasma modeling challenges using modern mathematical and computational techniques.
We seek candidates with demonstrated strength in artificial intelligence (AI) and scientific machine learning (SciML) applied to the modeling and analysis of complex multiphysics and multiscale systems, such as advanced propulsion systems; energy systems involving plasma and magnetohydrodynamic flows; and autonomous distributed systems. We especially welcome candidates whose work integrates physics-based modeling with data-driven methods, develops new algorithms for complex nonlinear systems, or connects numerical simulation with experimental data.
The successful candidate will be expected to build a sustainable, externally funded, and internationally recognized research program; contribute to the research mission of the Department of Mechanical Engineering; effectively teach and mentor undergraduate and graduate students; and participate in institutional and professional service.
In their research statement, applicants are encouraged to describe how their research complements the department’s existing strengths and how their work could contribute to and enhance TEMPEST’s capabilities.
Candidates must have an earned PhD in Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related discipline at the time of appointment, with an anticipated start date of August 16, 2027. Other qualifications include strong leadership and interpersonal skills, excellent written and oral communication skills, and an ability to work in a collaborative research environment. Successful candidates will be appointed to an academic-year position in the tenure system, with tenure, if appropriate. Successful candidates are expected to elevate MSU's reputation through their professional activities.
This is a union position represented by the Union of Tenure System Faculty (UTSF). The university is working with the union to establish a collective bargaining agreement.
