The HHD Department is one of the largest departments at Western. There are approximately 500 undergraduates enrolled in the three programs of Public Health, Recreation Management and Leadership, and Kinesiology and Physical Education (KPE). The KPE program includes three undergraduate majors including a B.S. in Kinesiology: Exercise Science, two minors including Exercise Science, and two graduate program options, including a M.S. in Kinesiology: Exercise Science. The department’s faculty members are dedicated to teaching, involved in research, and active in professional organizations. About the Position The Kinesiology and Physical Education Program of the Health and Human Development (HHD) Department at Western Washington University is seeking one full-time tenure track Assistant Professor of Kinesiology (exercise physiology emphasis) anticipated to begin September 2024.

The Department, the College, and the University value teaching and expect each person hired to be an exemplary teacher (including the use of effective strategies such as varied teaching formats, timely feedback, among others as appropriate); to be current in their discipline; to engage students actively in their learning; to maintain high standards regarding course content; and to be available to students through regularly scheduled office hours in keeping with department policy. Those hired are expected to participate in scholarly activity and perform career-related service roles on and off campus.

It is expected that the successful candidate be able to carry out the following responsibilities:

• Teach undergraduate and graduate courses on a quarter system

• Undergraduate advising and supervision of fieldwork

• Advising graduate students including thesis preparation and supervision

• Supervising graduate internships

• Demonstrate independence in scholarly and/or creative activity

• Perform career-related service roles on and off campus

 

Required Qualifications
  • Earned PhD/EdD, or other terminal degree, or ABD at time of application in the field of kinesiology or a related field with an emphasis in exercise physiology. If ABD, all degree requirements must be completed by June 15 of the first year of employment (e.g., for a September 2024 start date, all degree requirements must be completed by June 15, 2025).
  • Demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching at the university level
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and sustain independent research or scholarly activity
  • Evidence of ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in exercise physiology
  • Evidence of the ability to mentor master’s level research/theses
  • Evidence of the ability to commit to cultivating learning environments that are equitable and inclusive of students from diverse backgrounds and social identities.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Earned PhD/EdD, or other terminal degree, at time of application in the field of kinesiology or a related field with an emphasis in exercise physiology
  • Experience teaching undergraduate courses in exercise physiology and related topics such as: Measurement and Evaluation, Exercise Prescription, Physical Activity and Nutrition
  • Experience teaching graduate courses in exercise physiology and related topics such as: Laboratory techniques in Exercise Science, Applied Nutrition and Physical Activity, and Research Methods
  • Demonstrated ability of college-level teaching in exercise physiology
  • Experience mentoring undergraduate and graduate research
  • ACSM Exercise Physiologist or ACSM Clinical Exercise Physiologist certification

Salary

The starting salary range for assistant professor appointment, tenure-track is generally between $70,000 – $75,000, with placement within the position’s salary range commensurate with qualifications and professional experience. The entire salary range for the assistant professor position is $70,000 - $81,000, with the upper end of the salary range typically being achieved through collectively bargained salary adjustments. Relocation assistance may be available per University guidelines. Salary and Start-up funds are to be determined upon being offered the position.
