About the Position |
The Alternative Testing and Notetaking Services Administrator is responsible for the management, supervision, and day-to-day operations of the Disability Access Center’s (DAC) Alternative Testing and Notetaking Services accommodation programs. Reporting to the Director of the DAC, the Administrator is responsible for ensuring equal access to and inclusion in these programs for all qualified students with disabilities. The Administrator is likewise responsible for ensuring that these programs are provided in a timely and effective manner per state and federal laws and University policies. The position manages high-visibility communications with faculty and staff partners and provides disabled students the access and accommodation resources required for their access at Western.
Must work on site in Bellingham.
Position Duties and Responsibilities
60% - Manage the Alternative Testing Program
- Oversee a professional testing center that administers testing accommodations for disabled students, ensures academic integrity, and provides timely customer services to disabled students and to faculty teaching students receiving testing accommodations.
- Independently manage and conduct daily operations of the DAC Testing Center.
- Manage daily, weekly, and quarterly testing calendar.
- Prepare and administer examinations.
- Check in examinees, verify identification, and explain the exam process. Monitor examinees while testing and maintain a secure testing environment.
- Promptly return completed tests to faculty per department procedures.
- Scribe and proctor tests through the DAC office as needed.
- Develop and ensure consistent implementation of documented protocols for DAC Testing Center operations, including protocols for test administration. Collaboratively with supervisor and access managers, identify issues and implement improvements to protocol and practice.
- Establish and maintain accurate records of DAC Testing Center operations, ensuring adherence to law, policy, and best practices regarding information security, privacy, and records retention. Maintain the confidentiality of student records and information in compliance with department and university policy and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
- Work directly with students and faculty, explaining testing accommodations and providing advice on relevant services based on access needs.
- Provide technical and instructional support for faculty and students with disabilities regarding the use of adaptive technology/equipment and other alternative media devices required for examinations.
- Serve as liaison between students and faculty to secure the integrity of examinations.
- Forecast and anticipate DAC Testing Center space, staffing, and resource needs from internal projections and faculty/student demand for upcoming academic quarters.
- Develop and implement a communication strategy for specific stakeholder groups (i.e., students, faculty, and staff) to ensure process and timelines are broadly understood.
- Train students on the use of various types of adaptive technologies used in exam accommodations
20% - Manage Notetaking Accommodation Program
- Manage and facilitate operations of the DAC Notetaking program.
- Assist in recruiting suitable notetakers
- Manage peer notetaker employment records per department and University policies
- Provide technical and instructional support for disabled students in use of adaptive technology/equipment to facilitate effective notetaking, considering the impact of a specific student’s disability.
- Create, foster, and maintain collaborative working relationships with faculty, staff, administration and students.
- Maintain the confidentiality of student records and information in compliance with department and university policy and FERPA.
10% - Student Staff Management
- Hire, train, and supervise student employees to assist in completing tasks associated with accommodation programs.
- Support student employees’ development and competencies in the areas of inclusion, diversity, multicultural and cross-cultural proficiency.
- Administer hiring process and payroll approvals for student employees, including review and completion of required records.
10% - Other Duties as Assigned
- Participate in regular staff meetings.
- Participate in professional development to stay current in the field of testing and notetaking accommodation management. Participate in professional development regarding access, diversity, equity, and inclusion that advances abilities to facilitate accommodations and design and deliver programs that best serve students with multiple marginalized identities.
- Participate in Unit, Division, and university committees as assigned by supervisor
- In the performance of all duties, contribute to a collaborative and inclusive environment for colleagues and students.

Required Qualifications |
- Associate degree or two years of professional experience working with people with disabilities, preferably in higher education
- Knowledge of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, and other applicable laws.
- Professional experience working with people with disabilities.
- Demonstrated ability to deliver excellent services to, and support the development of, students who are disabled, BIPOC, and LGBTQ+, including students who hold multiple marginalized identities.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with students and faculty with varying levels of understanding about testing and notetaking accommodations.
- Experience supervising employees.
- Demonstrated excellent time management and organizational skills, professional judgment and problem-solving skills, and experience handling confidential and sensitive information.
- Ability to work effectively independently and collaboratively within a team and with stakeholders on other teams.
- Strong computer skills including working with databases, spreadsheets, and word processing.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Bachelor’s degree in education, human services, psychology, sociology, social work, or a closely related field
- Professional experience in higher education
- Experience administering testing programs
- Knowledge of assistive technologies
- Bilingual or basic American Sign Language (ASL) skills
- Experience with various types of adaptive technology used by persons with disabilities including reproduction of classroom content and electronic materials and media into accessible formats

Salary |
Hiring range is $53,267 - $61,257/year depending on qualifications and experience. Through longevity this position tops out at $69,247/year. |
