Play a key role within the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water as part of the Pipelines and Gas Networks Team within the Energy Operations branch.

  • Remuneration: $120,859 - $133,183 per annum plus Superannuation and Leave Loading

About the Team

The Pipeline and Gas Networks (P&GN) team within the Energy Operations branch of the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) is a unique team that is at the forefront of the gas and future fuels space in NSW including providing a significant safety and technical regulation role and key subject matter expertise across multiple gas related programs and policy areas of DCCEEW.

The P&GN team has several core primary functions including.

  • Safety & Technical Regulation of Gas Networks
  • Safety & Technical Regulation of Pipelines
  • Administer the licensing function under the Pipelines Act
  • Administer the Authority to Survey (ATS) function under the Pipelines Act
  • Administer existing Licensed Pipeline licences
  • Administer the Pipeline Search function under the Pipelines Act
  • Safety and Technical Regulation of Corrosion Protection Systems
  • Administer the NSW Corrosion Protection Register

 

About the Role

Provide safety, technical, and risk expertise to meet NSW Government's responsibilities under the Pipelines Act 1967, Gas Supply Act 1996, and Corrosion Protection Regulation 2020. Ensure safety risks align with public expectations by reviewing audits, management systems, incident investigations, and setting regulatory priorities. Collaborate with asset owners and industry committees to promote compliance, support Australian Standards development, participate in technical research, and contribute to industry guidelines. Provide technical input into NSW and Commonwealth programs related to renewable gases, including hydrogen and biomethane.

 

About you

You are a trusted and competent technical professional who has tertiary qualifications across any of the following disciplines: Mechanical, Chemical, Mechatronic, Electrical, Process Engineering and/or trade qualifications in plumbing or gas fitting with experience in the utilities industry. You have experience in technical project delivery with a focus on operations, maintenance and/or asset management.

You have sound knowledge and understanding of design principles and the construction, operation and maintenance of pipelines and gas networks (and their associated systems), including safety and risk management practices relating to such assets.

You are pro-active and self-motivated and are an effective communicator with the capability of engaging with a range of internal and external stakeholders at various levels.

You are ready to be part of a high-performing safety and technical regulatory team maintaining public safety through a risk based regulatory framework, delivering outcomes that directly benefit the vast communities of NSW.

 

Key Knowledge and Experience

Demonstrated experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Knowledge of gas network and pipeline construction, operation, maintenance and safety including emergency management, gas measurement, damage mechanisms, external interference management and corrosion protection.
  • Awareness of relevant Standards especially AS 2885, AS 4645, AS 4564, AS 2832.1, industry codes, legislative and regulatory frameworks.
  • Some experience within the gas or liquids industries with a specific focus on pipeline and distribution infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of international codes such as API 5L, ASME B31.8, B31.4 and B31.12.

 

Essential/Desirable Requirements

  • Tertiary qualifications in the following disciplines: Mechanical, Chemical, Mechatronic, Electrical, Process Engineering (or equivalent trade qualifications and experience) and/or,
  • Trade qualifications in plumbing or gas fitting with experience in the utilities industry.
  • Exposure to incident or compliance investigations and auditing activities would be highly regarded.
