The role

The Risk Officer role is crucial in promoting a culture of risk management and resilience within the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure (DPHI). This position involves working closely with stakeholders to operationalize the Risk Management Framework, providing critical advice and support to manage risks and control environments. Key responsibilities include establishing and managing stakeholder relationships, improving the quality and consistency of risk management information, and supporting continuous improvement initiatives to enhance the risk management framework, systems, and processes.

 

One of the main challenges of this role is ensuring that advice on control management and risk mitigation is accurate, timely, and practical while maintaining high-quality risk and resilience practices. The Risk Officer must foster consistency in risk management records and attention to detail amidst competing operational priorities and diverse business processes. Additionally, the role involves delivering risk awareness training, facilitating risk assessment and risk review workshops, reviewing and updating risk tools and resources and contributing to the preparation of accurate and timely risk reports for executive audiences and Audit Risk Committees.

What you will bring to the role

  • Expertise in Risk Management: You will bring a strong understanding of corporate governance, internal control, and risk management principles, supported by your experience in delivering these services across various enterprise operations.
  • Stakeholder Engagement Skills: Your ability to establish and manage effective relationships with stakeholders at all levels will be crucial in providing specialist advice and improving risk management processes.
  • Analytical and Problem-Solving Abilities: You will leverage your skills in analysing risk information, challenging assumptions, and identifying practical solutions to mitigate risks effectively.
  • Commitment to Continuous Improvement: Your proactive approach to supporting continuous improvement initiatives will enhance the risk management framework, systems, and processes within the department.
  • Training and Development: You will contribute to building the department's capability in risk management by delivering risk awareness training and facilitating risk assessment workshops.

Key knowledge and experience

  • Knowledge of corporate governance, internal control, and risk management principles and practices and exposure to a wide range of enterprise operations and activities
  • Experience in Microsoft Office suite including strong Excel, Word and PowerPoint skills
  • Experience in delivering corporate governance and risk management services
  • Some knowledge and understanding of government processes, public sector management, and NSW public sector legislation.

 

What is an essential requirement:

  • Tertiary qualifications in governance, risk management or related disciplines; or equivalent experience.
