The Strategic Policy and Cabinet Branch is a newly established team seeking to appoint a Project Officer to provide a range of research, analysis, reporting, implementation and administrative activities to support the development and delivery of Cabinet related projects, in line with established project plans and objectives.
The Cabinet team is a high functioning team that works collaboratively to provides strategic policy advice and support to DCCEEW Executives and Ministers’ Offices. The ideal candidate will have previous or relative experience in a similar role where an understanding of machinery of government, Cabinet, and parliamentary business is paramount. The Project Officer role will also be responsible for enhancing Cabinet team reporting capabilities and maintaining current data, in a sensitive and fast-paced environment, to support the effective operation of Cabinet.
Activities in the role might look like:
- Monitoring Cabinet schedules and relevant sources of information to ensure our internal tracking and reporting systems are up to date.
- Planning, coordinating and clearly communicating with DCCEEW policy and legal teams, The Cabinet Office, and other key government stakeholders on Cabinet-related matters.
- Enhancing reporting processes to DCCEEW Senior Executives including which data we capture and ensuring accurate numbers on generated reports.
- Drafting project plans for upcoming initiatives and liaising with the Senior Project Officer and Manager on progress status updates – particularly taking the initiative to monitor deadlines and raise emerging constraints or issues early.
- Scheduling and regularly reviewing our Standard Operating Procedures and templates, including suggestions for ways to improve or streamline processes.
- Be the first point of contact for troubleshooting access issues for Sharepoint and related software platforms across DCCEEW.
- Supporting processes for statutory appointments and Executive Council minutes.
- Monitoring and triaging shared team mailbox messages.
- Supporting the Cabinet team and broader Strategic Policy and Cabinet branch with ad hoc tasks or priorities that may arise.
About You
The ideal candidate will display:
- Strong analytical and communication skills, with a focus on ensuring materials are timely, accurate, well-structured and consistent with departmental standards and protocols
- An ability to work both independently and collaboratively as a team to anticipate and escalate risks within tight timeframes and a highly sensitive working environment to support effective decision making
- Sound judgement, discretion and professionalism when handling confidential or politically sensitive matters
- Experience coordinating across a diverse range of stakeholders including Directors, Executive Directors, Deputy Secretaries and Secretary to deliver projects in accordance with business goals
- Highly responsive and adaptable to last minute changes and competing demands with ability to prioritise—and re-prioritise—within short timeframes
- A commitment to continuous improvement, inclusive practice and supporting a positive team culture
- Experience with data tracking, reporting, management, analysis and visualisation tools such as PowerBI will be highly regarded
- Interest in expanding knowledge of DCCEEW, Machinery of Government and broader policy functions with the opportunity to develop strong cross-government networks and relationships
