About the role

This is an exciting opportunity for a highly skilled Geographical Information System (GIS) Officer to join the Lord Howe Island Board. Located on the beautiful Lord Howe Island, this position will conduct spatial analysis and produce high level maps for both internal and external client.  

 

The GIS Officer’s contribution will be significant in supporting the world heritage outcomes for the Lord Howe Island Board. They will work with a combination of technologies and synthesise complex data from several sources to advise on multiple issues, inform research and create accessible and easily interpretable outputs regarding Lord Howe Island Geographical space. The GIS Officer may at times have to deliver GIS training and technical support to LHIB spatial application users.

 

About You

 

You’re a GIS subject matter expert who is passionate about the environment and wants to contribute your expertise to the Lord Howe Island Board. You will be comfortable working independently and across teams and can build networks across organisations and agencies to establish a strong community practice. You are resilient and keen for the challenge that comes with working in a remote location including limited technology.

 

Essential Requirements

 

  • Tertiary qualifications in Science, Surveying or relevant Engineering fields and/or equivalent level of knowledge and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and managing organisation-wide Geographic Information Systems.
  • Skills in GIS analysis and data management to achieve project objectives.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with relevant computer and GIS systems (especially Fulcrum, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online and ESRI Web Apps)
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the design and management of complex field apps, data collection workflows and user design experience for a range of audiences.
  • Experience in the delivery of GIS training and/or provision of technical support to users.
  • Holder of a current motor vehicle driver's licence.

Who we are

Lord Howe Island is located in the Tasman Sea approximately 700km north east of Sydney and is part of NSW. The Island has a high proportion of rare and endemic birds, plants, and invertebrates, and has the southernmost coral reef in the world. Three-quarters of the Island is within the Permanent Park Preserve, which is managed similarly to a national park. There are approximately 445 residents, and tourism is the major industry and source of income on the Island. Approximately 16,000 people visit the Island each year and there are 21 accommodation lodges.

The Lord Howe Island Board (the Board) is a statutory authority established under the provisions of the Lord Howe Island Act 1953. The Board is responsible to the NSW Minister for the Environment and comprises four Islanders elected by the local community and three members appointed by the Minister. It is charged with the care, control and management of the Island and the affairs and trade of the Island. It is also responsible for the care, improvement and welfare of the Island and residents. “Island” as defined by the Act includes Lord Howe Island and all adjacent islands and coral reefs within one marine league of the Island. Ball’s Pyramid and adjacent islands are also included in this definition.

The Lord Howe Island Board is part of the Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) cluster. Lord Howe Island Board members and staff are employed under section 21 of the Government Sector Employment and Management Act 2013, by DCCEEW.
