Our Water, Wetlands & Coastal Science branch is currently seeking to appoint enthusiastic Environmental Technicians to provide field, technical and logistic support to research projects undertaken within the Estuaries and Catchments Team. The work includes supporting ongoing field monitoring campaigns in coastal, estuarine and freshwater environments across NSW and includes regular travel.

The role also supports the team in project delivery including procurement, maintenance and calibration of instruments, field work, laboratory work, data collation and data base management.

We provide water environment data, technical expertise and strategic advice to help authorities and governments protect NSW waterways and manage coastal hazards. Our work provides safe swimming beaches for the community, and supports environmental water managers maintain healthy wetlands, catchment managers identify land-use pressures on estuaries and local government make decisions on coastal management.

About you

Do you like being outdoors, in the laboratory and diving deep into data? As the Environmental Technician you will be the foundation of a high performing science and research team that works across multiple waterways environments aimed at building knowledge to inform management and policy decision. You will be part of a supportive and high performing team to deliver waterways research and monitoring. You will be committed to working collaboratively to support the team to deliver customer-focused results from technical or scientific projects.

You will provide

  • Operation/deployment of a range of environmental instrumentation in field and laboratory conditions to ensure successful completion of research projects.
  • Support team members to undertake regular monitoring of waterways environments across NSW
  • Preparation of samples for despatch to laboratories for analyses to ensure sample collection protocols and standards are maintained.
  • Collating and preparing and undertaking statistical analysis of data; and well-presented data reports to ensure successful completion of research projects.
  • Preparation of routine reports and correspondence and drafts operating procedures and manuals, including development and maintenance of equipment inventories detailing operational status, maintenance and calibration.

You will have

  • Experience or skills relevant to organising field trips including preparation of field gear and instruments and organisation of collection equipment with comprehensive understanding of safety procedures.
  • Boating or other relevant field skills, ability to work effectively outdoors and in boats under a range of conditions.
  • Understanding of Quality Control and Quality Assurance procedures for biological, chemical, water and sediment sampling and common sources of contamination and error
  • Demonstrated experience on operation and calibration/maintenance of scientific equipment and instrumentation, including that used for measurement of biogeochemical processes in estuarine and freshwater sediments
  • Current commercial boat licence (Coxswain 3 or higher) or willing to obtain one. Current car drivers’ licence and demonstrated experience in towing and backing trailers.
