The Role

As a Legal Officer, you’ll work with the Commercial and Innovation legal team who are dedicated to providing expert advice and innovative legal services on a range of complex areas, including commercial agreements, government procurement, intellectual property, grants and funding arrangements, and technology solutions including cyber security and emerging technologies like AI. Your role will encompass the following, supported by senior lawyers in the team:

  • Engaging with stakeholders and aiding in the delivery of client focused legal services
  • Drafting, reviewing and negotiating a broad range of legal documents including commercial contracts and funding agreements
  • Conducting legal research and drafting legal advice on complex areas of law and policy
  • Assisting the team to keep abreast of contemporary legal advancements, particularly in emerging areas of innovation and technology.

Key challenges include:

  • Managing competing priorities and tight timeframes in a busy working environment
  • Providing advisory services and acting on the negotiation of contracts to assist in the management of legal risks and future challenges

You will be joining a highly collaborative and supportive team with strong stakeholder relationships. We are viewed as trusted advisors in their decision making. Our work is interesting and varied, often incorporating elements of commercial law, intellectual property law, technology law, construction law, administrative law and statutory interpretation. What you will bring to the role

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to be able to draft written legal advice that is clear, concise and outcomes focussed
  • Experience drafting and negotiating commercial contracts and/or funding agreements
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills, with the ability to identify key issues and think critically to find strategically focused and evidence-based solutions
  • Previous experience as a lawyer or an experienced Paralegal (Please note you will need to be admitted or qualified for admission as a Solicitor or Barrister in the Supreme Court of NSW and hold a practising certificate)

What is an essential requirement:

Admitted or qualified for admission as a Solicitor or Barrister in the Supreme Court of NSW and hold, or be eligible to hold, a NSW Practising Certificate.
