Our Climate & Atmospheric Science Branch is currently seeking to appoint a Principal Scientist Integration, in an ongoing capacity, to lead high-impact applied research in climate change adaptation, with a focus on the built environment. This ongoing senior role involves guiding cross-disciplinary efforts to deliver evidence-based solutions that shape government policy and support adaptation strategies across NSW.
As part of the Adaptation Impact and Risk Science (AIRS) team, the Principal Scientist will contribute to a dynamic, multidisciplinary group known for its expertise in integrated research, strategic program coordination, and knowledge brokering. The AIRS team plays a key role in delivering science and insights to government partners and advancing the NSW Climate Change Adaptation Strategy.
The Principal Scientist Integration leads and mentors a team of 4 scientists ensuring the delivery of high-quality research and fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation and continuous professional development. You will play a critical role in shaping the team’s approach to climate adaptation research, while leveraging your strong scientific background and proven leadership abilities. A track record of academic publishing and cross-sector collaboration will be crucial as you work to influence decision-making and develop practical, policy-driven solutions that make a real-world impact.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and coordinate applied research on climate change adaptation, with a focus on the built environment.
- Broker the science, integrating cross-disciplinary research to produce actionable, evidence-based solutions
- Provide actionable technical advice to senior leaders in across the NSW Government on climate adaptation strategies and policies
- Develop and manage large complex datasets to support climate risk and opportunity assessments, ensuring evidence supports effective adaptation actions
- Guide and mentor a team of 4 scientists, ensuring high standards and fostering a collaborative, innovative culture
About You
You are a strategic, results-oriented scientist with extensive experience in applied climate change adaptation research. You have a strong academic publishing record and a proven ability to broker science, collaborating with government and research partners to deliver policy-relevant solutions.
Your experience includes:
- Expertise in climate change adaptation with a focus on delivering applied, evidence-driven research
- High proficiency in using GIS, Python, Power BI, and/or AI to process and translate large datasets (e.g., NetCDF) into end-user datasets, online tools, and model inputs.
- A strong publishing record, with published works that showcase your ability to collaborate with government and research institutions to create impactful research
- Proven leadership and mentoring skills, with experience guiding teams to produce high-quality research programs
- Established networks with key government departments, including local government, and the ability to influence decision-making at the highest levels
- Willing and able to travel within NSW and interstate, as needed (approx. quarterly)
Essential Requirements
- Scientific degree in a relevant field and/or demonstrated experience developing and leading rigorous, discrete, science programs in a relevant scientific discipline.
