About the role
National Parks and Wildlife Service has a unique opportunity for a Project Officer to work as part of the team and contribute towards the conservation of the natural environment, flora, fauna and Aboriginal heritage.
This Project Officer role ‘with a difference’ supports key functions and projects in the Fire & Incident Operations Branch, including:
- Coordinating and developing high quality material including general correspondence that clearly communicates the agency’s position on complex, sensitive and controversial issues often within urgent timeframes.
- Contributing to the preparation of Ministerial and Executive materials, including briefings, reports, event packs, parliamentary and estimates briefings, plans and strategies, as well as correspondence. Contribute to ensuring issues are addressed, ensuring consistency of agency position, editorial accuracy and consistency with protocols and procedures.
- Working collaboratively across Fire and Incident Management Branch Units to coordinate content for Ministerials, correspondence, parliamentary notes, questions on notice, briefing notes and other ad hoc requests for information.
- Secretariat support to the Fire and Incident Executive Steering Committee and its sub-committees including coordinating agendas, papers, minutes and communication for the meetings and the Committee.
- Coordinating NPWS process in relation to awards and honours such as National Medal, National Emergency Medal including but not limited to: expression of interest process, compilation of Schedules according to Honours Secretariat requirements, correspondence with recipients, development of protocols for presentation ceremonies and coordination of presentation ceremonies.
About You
The ideal candidate is a proactive and organised project officer with experience supporting executive-level functions in a fast-paced government or emergency management setting. They will have a strong track record in preparing high-quality written materials—such as briefs, reports, and correspondence—often under tight timeframes, and a solid understanding of public sector protocols and parliamentary processes.
Success in this role requires excellent communication and collaboration skills, strong attention to detail, and the ability to manage competing priorities. The candidate will be confident demonstrating sound judgement and bring a solutions-focused mindset to navigating complex and sensitive issues.

- Appropriate tertiary qualifications and/or equivalent relevant working experience in project management.

The Fire & incident Operations Branch:
- provides support and coordination for fire, incidents, marine wildlife and aviation management
- develops fire and incident related strategy, policy and planning
- develops and delivers operational procedures, systems and staff capability training
- coordinates policy and procedures for safe aviation operations across the agency as well as the delivery of internal services to NPWS through ParkAir
- coordinates and staffs key State Duty Officer roles during incidents.
