About the role

National Parks and Wildlife Service has a unique opportunity for a Ranger to work as part of the team and contribute towards the conservation of the natural environment, flora, fauna and Aboriginal heritage.

The beautiful Hastings Macleay area is located on Thunggutti/ Dhungutti and Biripi/ Birpai country on the Mid North Coast. The area has a huge range of environments and special places that our rangers manage, including four state heritage listed places, large areas of World Heritage and wilderness, stunning coastlines and camping areas across over 50 different reserves. Being primarily based in Port Macquarie, the position will be working with a team of 7 other rangers and a Team Leader based in both Port Macquarie and Kempsey, working with a mixture of very experienced and up and coming staff in both locations.  

 

This role is highly diverse, our Rangers are responsible for planning, implementing and supervising projects, conducting environmental assessments, liaising with visitors and stakeholders, and collaborating with a wide range of people within and external to the agency.   Your strong communication and problem-solving skills will assist you in tackling evolving reserve management priorities.

 

 

About You

 

 

You will have experience in a range of land management and conservation issues, including both wildfire and prescribed fire, visitors, pest, project and infrastructure management. Working well with a range of both internal and external stakeholders, you will be comfortable collaborating with your extended team and helping others with their goals. Experience in the use of GIS and other systems would be an advantage to help you manage your parks effectively and efficiently.

 

It an essential requirement you have completed a degree in a relevant field of study such as protected area management and you are required to provide a copy of your degree qualifications prior to interview.

 

 

Essential Requirements – As detailed in the Role Description

 

  • A degree or equivalent relevant to the field operations of the Agency.
  • Current Australian Class C Drivers licence or equivalent and ability to operate four-wheel-drive vehicles.
  • Required to obtain certification at the appropriate level prior to undertaking firefighting/incident control duties.
  • Willingness to fly in light aircraft and preparedness and ability to be involved in incident management duties including firefighting.

This is a physically active role suited to candidates of all genders who are fit, enjoy working outdoors as part of a team, and are eager to learn and develop the skills and qualifications needed to contribute toward improving and maintaining some of NSW’s most precious natural places. Applicants must meet the requirements of a specific medical assessment which is inclusive of a clearance to undertake the fitness test for firefighting fitness roles (i.e. moderate level Task-Based Assessment for Firefighters) within the 12-month probationary period, if relevant.

The role holder must obtain certification at the appropriate level prior to undertaking firefighting/incident control duties.
