The Strategic Policy, Science and Engagement (SPSE) Group within the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) is currently seeking to recruit a Director Ministerial Services.   

The Director Ministerial Services leads the delivery of ministerial and parliamentary services to all portfolio Ministers for DCCEEW (Energy, Climate Change, Environment, Heritage and Water), including the provision of briefings, reports, policy advice, correspondence, and parliamentary support. The role ensures that Ministerial Services is a trusted partner, enabler, and an effective and efficient conduit between the Ministers’ Offices and all of DCCEEW’s portfolio agencies.

This role requires regular engagement with the portfolio Ministers and is a critical part of setting the tone and nature of the relationship with these offices.  

About You

You will be an experienced Director of ministerial or parliamentary services and enjoy being at the centre of government decision making. 

You are a highly motivated, driven and experienced senior executive leader who enjoys and is exceptional at strategically engaging with the department, Ministers, and key government stakeholders. This is a unique opportunity to operate at the highest levels of government, working closely with the Secretary, executive leadership, Ministerial Offices, and central agencies.

 

In this critical leadership role, you will:

  • Serve as the primary liaison between the department, portfolio Ministers, The Cabinet Office/Premier’s Department, and relevant agencies.
  • Lead the development of strategies that ensure the timely, accurate, and high-quality provision of advice and information to Ministers in line with government expectations.
  • Provide authoritative guidance on parliamentary protocols and the machinery of government, enabling effective decision-making at the highest levels.
  • Drive performance and manage competing priorities to ensure excellence in service delivery and responsiveness across all Ministerial and parliamentary functions.
  • Forge strategic links between the portfolio’s work and Ministerial priorities, keeping the department informed of evolving parliamentary and political landscapes.
  • Oversee the preparation of complex, sensitive, and high-stakes advice and briefing materials that align with government policy and meet the needs of Ministers.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with Ministerial Offices, central agencies, and senior departmental leaders to foster collaboration, facilitate information flow, and deliver results.

 Essential Requirements

  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline or extensive experience in, and understanding of, government and public administration, legislative, Cabinet and Parliamentary processes and protocols, and the role of Ministers and agencies in Government.
  • Extensive experience in delivering high level support services to Senior Executives and Ministers, preparing briefings, policy advice, ministerial correspondence, parliamentary products and related materials.
  • Extensive experience in issues management in a high volume and contentious environment, particularly across environment, energy, climate change, water or heritage portfolios.
