The role
As a Senior Ministerial and Parliamentary Liaison Officer, within the Office of the Secretary, your role is all about keeping things sharp, responsive, and  sound. You’ll be the go-to for high-level support across ministerial briefings, parliamentary documents, and complex correspondence-making sure everything aligns with ministerial and Departmental protocols and is delivered with precision  under pressure. Whether it’s managing urgent or sensitive requests, guiding junior staff, or coordinating major processes like Budget Estimates and Question Time, your work ensures the Department runs smoothly and is communicated effectively.

This environment is fast-paced and requires responsiveness, so being able to maintain your cool under shifting priorities and tight deadlines is key to success in this role. You’ll work closely with your manager and colleagues to troubleshoot escalations, refine systems, and improve workflows, with a keen eye on quality, consistency, and with intention to make strategic impact.

What you will bring to the role

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, to effectively convey ideas and collaborate with team members.
  • Comfortable working under pressure and responding rapidly to shifting priorities driven by parliamentary cycles and urgent ministerial needs.
  • Outstanding stakeholder engagement skills, fostering strong relationships and ensuring alignment with diverse stakeholders to achieve outcomes.
  • Demonstrated flexibility and adaptability to thrive in a fast-paced and dynamic work environment.
  • High level administrative skills with the ability to prioritise tasks and competing demands.
  • Meticulous attention to detail amidst high-volume workloads, ensuring accuracy and precision in all tasks and deliverables.
  • Ability to manage politically sensitive and high-impact matters with discretion, sound judgment, and strategic awareness.
  • Skilled in coordinating cross-functional teams and processes to deliver consistent, high-quality ministerial and parliamentary products.
  • Proficient in interpreting and applying government protocols, guidelines, and frameworks to ensure compliance and effective communication.

Key knowledge and experience 

  • Demonstrated understanding of government and public administration, legislation, and the role of Minsters and agencies in Government.

Essential requirements

  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline and/or equivalent professional experience.
