  • Salary relative to experience. Part time opportunity and ranges from $75,728 to $82,329 (please note pro rata rates will apply) + superannuation + 8.5% loading for weekends / public holidays

About the role

National Parks and Wildlife Service has a unique opportunity for a Visitor Service Assistant to join our team and contribute towards the conservation of the natural environment, flora, fauna and Aboriginal heritage. 

 

Dorrigo Rainforest Centre is about to undergo a major upgrade with a temporary visitor centre being constructed currently 1km away. Dorrigo National Park is a busy visitor destination for International, Interstate and Intrastate visitors. It is one of the top preforming National Parks visitor centres in NSW and this has been achieved by a friendly, professional team who provide exceptional customer service. The role of the Visitor Services assistant will be to welcome and assist visitors to the changing access points and opportunities and provide updates to visitors on the exciting Dorrigo VC and Escarpment great walk project developments.  Visitor Service Assistants will need to be adaptive and agile moving from outside carpark and picnic area locations to retail services in the centre when required.

 

About You

In this role, you will draw on your experience in customer‑facing environments, where you have developed strong skills in delivering friendly, high‑quality service and managing a wide range of enquiries. Your ability to communicate clearly with diverse audiences—international, interstate and local visitors alike—will ensure every guest feels welcomed, informed and supported throughout their visit. You bring confidence in cash‑handling processes, basic computer and tablet operations and the use of tools such as two‑way radios, enabling you to move seamlessly between front‑of‑house service, retail support and visitor information duties. Your knowledge of visitor operations, combined with a genuine interest in parks, nature and community engagement, positions you perfectly to assist visitors as Dorrigo Rainforest Centre undergoes an exciting period of change.

You are someone who thrives in dynamic outdoor environments and can adapt quickly to shifting priorities, locations and visitor needs. Whether working independently or as part of a team, you demonstrate sound judgement, professionalism and a calm, solutions‑focused approach when responding to enquiries or managing challenges. Your interpersonal skills allow you to build rapport easily, while your reliability, resilience and willingness to undertake enforcement responsibilities ensure you can uphold NPWS standards with confidence and consistency. With a commitment to safety, teamwork and exceptional service delivery, you play a key role in creating memorable experiences for every visitor to Dorrigo National Park.

 

Essential requirements - As detailed in the Role Description

  • Experience in cash handling procedures.
  • Excellent oral communication, negotiation and customer service skills with experience dealing with customer inquiries and the ability to manage such inquiries in a manner that addresses customer’s concerns.
  • Capacity and willingness to undertake enforcement duties associated with the park use fee system and the Departments’ / NPWS Regulations, with an ability to work unsupervised and adapt to competing priorities
  • Basic computer skills and the ability to operate a two-way radio.
  • Current manual driver’s licence.
  • The holder of this role will be required to wear an NPWS uniform.
  • This role may also involve regular evening and weekend work. This is a shift-based position, under the Crown Employees (Public Service Conditions of Employment) Reviewed Award 2009.

 

Note:  Parts of these duties are performed outside of normal operating times, and staff are rostered in pairs to perform this function
