About the roles

Share your passion and knowledge for the Australia bush and/or astronomy by becoming a Discovery Ranger (Tour Guide) in the breath taking Warrumbungles National Park, Pilliga Forest and beyond. Join our small, tight knit Visitor Experience team who love the outdoors and encouraging others to discover the national parks in the Castlereagh Area of the Northern Inland Branch.

 

Discovery Rangers deliver education and knowledge, which provides insightful and exciting experience to help educate people on the importance of our natural environments and the need for their protection.  As a Discovery Ranger, you will develop and implement diverse activities and learning experiences for visitors to the State’s national parks and reserves to foster community awareness, appreciation and understanding for conserving the state’s natural and cultural heritage, as part of a statewide coordinated education program. The majority of the Discovery tours are held between March and November to coincide with the more agreeable weather.  Please note the roles require a willingness to work flexible hours, including weekdays, weekends, public holidays and school holidays.

 

About You

To be successful in the role, you will have:

  • Specific knowledge, or a willingness to learn, about the Australian bush and/or astronomy, and to provide educational experiences on your tours regarding your knowledge base.
  • Some experience tour guiding or facilitating a group.
  • Demonstrated ability to ensure the optimal safety of tour participants and children consistent with the risks associated with exposure to the natural environment.
  • Able to demonstrate a high standard of providing visitor experience in ensuring that educational activities are appropriate to the audience.
  • Able to maintain a professionalism through tidy attire, punctuality, and effective communication to uphold a prominent and professional image for NPWS.

 

Essential Requirements

  • A current Working with Children Check (WWCC) is an essential requirement for this role. The role has been identified as requiring this check in line with the Child Protection (Working With Children) Act 2012.
  • First Aid Certificate and Current Australian Drivers Licence, or willingness to obtain. 
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekdays, weekends, public holidays and school holidays.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and delivering interpretative guiding and/or educational programs to students or groups.
  • Awareness of Aboriginal culture and broad knowledge of the natural and historic heritage values of the local area.
  • Sound understanding of Risk Management, Minimal Impact and Bush Safety principles in relation to guided tours in a cultural or field setting.
