General Counsel and Chief Risk Officer

The ESC General Counsel is the primary legal advisor to the Board, CEO and Executive Team on all legal and enterprise risk matters relevant to the ESC and its investments. The role is a key executive leadership role, including to ensures the ESC operates within its legislative and regulatory framework while effectively managing legal, compliance, and enterprise risk across all investment and operational activities.

The role is designated as the ESC Chief Risk Officer, with responsibility for designing the corporation’s risk management framework and for the oversight of activities associated with coordinating, maintaining and embedding the framework in the ESC. This dual-function role is critical to supporting the ESC’s investment mandate, while maintaining the highest standards of governance, integrity, and risk oversight.

 

About You

 

To be successful in this position, you will be an experienced senior executive with a strong track record in leading a legal and/or corporate risk team. You will be a strong people leader with exceptional communication and stakeholder engagement skills. You will be highly experienced in resolving complex legal matters within the energy sector whilst demonstrating a strategic approach to mitigating risk across the organisation.

 

Essential Requirements

 

  • Law degree and unrestricted admission to practice law in NSW.
  • Extensive experience in the provision of legal and contract advice, preferably in the government, infrastructure and/or financial services/investment sectors.
  • Experience in establishing and leading a legal, governance and risk management function within a start-up and/or government context.
  • Experience with project finance and investment structuring, terms sheets and agreements, preferably for renewable energy projects.
  • Experience in government relations and understanding of public infrastructure investment.
  • Excellent drafting skills.
  • Strong understanding of public sector governance, statutory compliance, and administrative law.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • High ethical standards and sound judgment.
