The role

As a Project Support Officer in the Bushfire Program, you’ll play a key role in delivering statewide initiatives that strengthen bushfire preparedness and environmental resilience. Your work will span the south‑west and south‑east regions, supporting both operational and strategic project activities.

This is a dynamic role with a healthy mix of fieldwork, research, stakeholder engagement, and administrative coordination. No two days look the same, and your contribution will directly support safer, more resilient landscapes and communities.

What you’ll be doing

  • Supporting statewide bushfire projects by monitoring progress, tracking milestones, and ensuring delivery aligns with approved time, cost, and quality expectations.
  • Updating and maintaining essential project documentation, including GIS mapping, databases, and records to ensure compliance with project management standards.
  • Conducting basic research, environmental assessments, and fieldwork to inform project briefs and support evidence‑based decision making.
  • Working closely with the bushfire team and regional staff to implement project plans and achieve agreed outcomes.
  • Communicating with stakeholders to provide updates on project status, asset data, and implementation issues.
  • Delivering high‑quality administrative and secretariat support, including coordinating meetings, preparing papers, and assisting with project reporting.

Who we’re looking for

We’re seeking someone who thrives in a collaborative, fast‑paced environment and is motivated by meaningful, community‑focused work. The ideal candidate will bring a blend of technical capability, organisational strength, and a willingness to get involved both in the field and behind the scenes.

  • Project support or coordination experience, ideally within environmental, emergency management, infrastructure, or government programs.
  • Strong organisational and time‑management skills, with the ability to juggle multiple tasks, track progress, and meet deadlines.
  • Competence in data entry, record‑keeping, and document management, with high attention to detail.
  • Ability to conduct basic research and analysis, including interpreting environmental or technical information.
  • Comfort working in the field, including participating in environmental assessments and site visits.
  • Clear and confident communication skills, enabling effective engagement with regional teams, stakeholders, and project partners.
  • Strong teamwork mindset, with the ability to collaborate across diverse teams and support shared project goals.
  • Proficiency with standard office software, including spreadsheets, databases, and project tracking tools.

Essential requirements

  • Current NSW Driver’s License and willingness to travel.
