A spectacular blend of cultivated garden and wilderness tracts within the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area, the Blue Mountains Botanic Garden Mount Tomah is an ‘island within an island’ that plays a key role in conservation and research of plants from a range of diverse ecosystems in Australia and around the world.
The Garden features many rare species, spectacular cool climate trees, seasonal colour, historically significant plantings and tranquil spaces for picnics or forest bathing.
The role
Our Ornamental Gardens team is currently seeking a Horticultural Labourer who will contribute to the construction and maintenance of horticultural displays within the Blue Mountain Botanic Garden. This is the ideal role for someone who is passionate about plants, and works effectively both independently and as part of a team.
You’ll work as part of a supportive team, using horticultural tools and machinery, helping with weed control, propagation and general garden maintenance, and making sure work is carried out safely. No two days are the same, and you’ll build practical skills while contributing to landscapes enjoyed by visitors from all over the world.

What you will bring to the role
- A genuine interest in plants, gardens, conservation and working outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Experience (or a strong interest) in maintaining horticultural displays, parks, gardens or natural areas.
- A practical, hands‑on attitude and willingness to learn new skills and follow safe work practices.
- Experience using horticultural machinery and equipment, or the motivation to learn and use it safely.
- An understanding of workplace health and safety, with the ability to work safely around visitors, colleagues and equipment.
- Interest in weed control and plant care, with attention to detail when working around native and desirable species.
This is an exciting opportunity to join a group of world-leading staff from the fields of science and horticulture.
What is an essential requirement:
- Current driver’s licence and willingness to undertake fieldwork for extended periods of time and have the ability to lift and carry a minimum 15 kilos.
- Ability to work outside of normal working hours and on weekends if required.
