The NSW Biodiversity Conservation Trust (BCT)has an exciting opportunity for a Technical Services Officer to use their skills to make a meaningful contribution to private land conservation for the people of NSW.
This is a targeted role under GSE Rule 26 and Aboriginal people are encouraged to apply.

Come and join a team that is delivering best practices in data management and geospatial technical services which empower the BCT to deliver conservation benefits for NSW. The Technical Services Officer is a member of a state-wide Programs team and plays a key role in blending technical ‘know how’ with on-ground delivery of conservation initiatives, strategic planning, decision support, and policy development.
In this role, you will provide geospatial technical services to operational staff with activities including data management and analysis, troubleshooting, training, and input into development of systems, tools, and procedures.
You will work collaboratively with regional teams across the organisation to uphold best-practice methods for the collection, management, analysis, and reporting of biodiversity and land-management data. You’ll help build and maintain a growing network of private protected areas across NSW.
This role is predominantly office-based with occasional opportunities to participate in field-based work, involving travel to and work in remote areas.
About the role
This role is positioned within the Agreements and Technical Services Team of the BCT, a high performing team of content experts who have a leading role in driving strategic direction and standards. This role will work closely with the BCT Principal Technical Officer and Senior Technical Officers to deliver strategic projects and operational support.
It's an exciting, challenging and important role that is helping to ensure that the BCT has the evidence it needs to make informed decisions around future priorities and investment.
In this role you will:
- Provide technical support for staff capturing and editing geospatial data for the establishment, administration, and monitoring of private land conservation agreements in NSW.
- Train and support staff in the use of GIS technology for field-based assessment and monitoring work.
- Source information and respond to internal requests for specialised GIS techniques including data manipulation, analysis, mapping and reporting within strict timeframes.
- Provide a wide range of technical services including troubleshooting, spatial analysis and map production, advice and recommendations to address operational issues.
- Contribute to the effective and efficient capture and curation of corporate geospatial data and maintenance of data quality standards.
- Participate in the design and implementation of systems that provide BCT personnel with ready and reliable access to geospatial data and services.
About You

- Have excellent communication skills to collaborate with and support geographically dispersed regional staff and document procedures and metadata.
- Have the ability to work in an operational environment with timely and accurate delivery of outputs.

The New South Wales Biodiversity Conservation Trust (BCT) is a not-for-profit statutory body, established under Part 10 of the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016 and managed by a Board appointed by the Minister for the Environment.
The Trust’s roles are to support and encourage landholders to enter into agreements to conserve and protect biodiversity on private land, guided by the government’s Biodiversity Conservation Investment Strategy; secure biodiversity offsets when developers choose to pay into the Biodiversity Conservation Fund; and other activities that promote greater awareness of, appreciation and understanding of, biodiversity and the importance of conserving it.
We acknowledge the ongoing custodial responsibilities of the Aboriginal peoples of NSW to care for Country and are committed to establishing meaningful partnerships with Aboriginal peoples in the management of the environment.
Participation in the NSW Biodiversity Offsets Scheme (BOS) and the BCT’s private land conservation (PLC) programs
The successful applicant for this role will be required to declare any conflict of interests related to the Biodiversity Offsets Scheme, as defined in the Biodiversity Offsets Scheme Conflict of Interests Protocol. This ensures the department is made aware of potential conflicts of interest so they can be appropriately managed.
Where an applicant has a high-risk “defined interest” in the Biodiversity Offsets Scheme, they may be required to divest this interest before being employed by the department.
