The role
The Senior Legal Officer supports clear, defensible decision‑making by delivering authoritative legal advice across a complex regulatory environment, with a stronger emphasis on managing contentious and high‑risk matters. It helps the Department navigate disputes, enforcement and potential litigation by interpreting legislation, policy and case law, assessing legal risk, and translating complex legal issues into practical options that protect the public interest and the Department’s statutory responsibilities.
The role operates in a fast‑paced setting where competing priorities, sensitive issues and tight timeframes are common. It contributes to the preparation and review of litigation‑related advice, statutory instruments, and legal documents, and works closely with internal and external stakeholders to resolve disputes and manage legal exposure. Through sound judgment, contemporary legal knowledge and a collaborative approach, the role supports lawful outcomes while strengthening the organisation’s capacity to manage litigation and regulatory risk effectively.

What you will bring to the role
- Sound legal judgment in complex and contested matters, bringing the ability to analyse legislation, evidence and risk to support defensible decisions, including where disputes or potential litigation are involved.
- Clear, practical advice under pressure, translating complex legal and litigation issues into concise options that enable timely executive and statutory decision‑making.
- Strong litigation and dispute awareness, with experience contributing to the preparation of litigation‑related advice, court and compliance documentation, and strategies to manage regulatory and reputational risk.
- A collaborative, solutions‑focused approach, working effectively with internal stakeholders, external agencies and legal counterparts to resolve issues, manage conflict and progress matters efficiently.
- Professional integrity and accountability, maintaining high ethical standards, contemporary legal knowledge and a strong commitment to public interest outcomes in a complex government environment.
Key knowledge and experience
Experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Planning and environmental law including the Environmental Planning & Assessment Act
- Administrative law or experience in the policy making and legislative process and good knowledge of statutory interpretation
- Property, native title or crown lands law
- Contract and commercial law
- Local government law
- Compliance and regulatory law, prosecutions and general litigation.
What is an essential requirement:
- Admitted or qualified for admission as a Solicitor or Barrister in the Supreme Court of NSW and hold, or be eligible to hold, a NSW Practising Certificate
