About us
Placemaking NSW is responsible for managing and caring for some of Sydney’s most iconic harbourside venues and locations, including The Rocks, Barangaroo, Darling Harbour and White Bay Power Station. We also lead the planning and delivery of the Bays West Urban Renewal Precinct, a state significant project that will bring new homes, jobs, and public spaces to 77 hectares of government-owned land just 2 kilometres from Sydney's CBD. 

The role
In this role, you’ll shape and champion high‑quality public domain, urban design and open space outcomes across some of NSW’s most high‑profile and complex precincts. Working closely with internal teams and external partners, you’ll provide trusted design advice and lead the development and delivery of architecture, urban and landscape design that enhances place, supports community needs and reflects best practice.

You’ll balance multiple projects and stakeholder expectations, translating complex design concepts into clear, practical advice while influencing outcomes and maintaining a strong focus on design excellence, collaboration and delivery.

What you will bring to the role

  • Proven experience delivering complex urban, architecture, landscape and public domain projects, ideally within a government or highly regulated environment
  • Strong knowledge of NSW planning legislation, policy and processes, including state significant and high‑profile precincts
  • Demonstrated ability to provide clear, evidence‑based design advice and challenge design outcomes to achieve best‑practice place making
  • Well‑developed communication skills, with the ability to translate complex design concepts into clear, practical advice for diverse audiences
  • Strong stakeholder engagement, influence and negotiation skills, working collaboratively across internal teams and external partners
  • Sound project and workload management skills, balancing multiple priorities while maintaining quality, consistency and transparency
  • A commitment to design excellence, integrity and public value, with a contemporary understanding of best practice urban and landscape design


What is an essential requirement:

  • Tertiary qualifications in landscape architecture and/or urban design or another built environment discipline and membership, or ability to become a member, of a relevant professional body such as AILA, AIA, PIA or UDA, or equivalent experience.
