Do you want your work to directly contribute to the NSW’s most threatened species and ecosystems?
The Threatened Species Unit within the Biodiversity & Ecological Health Branch of the NSW National Parks & Wildlife Service (part of the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW)) is seeking a Senior Project Officer Threatened Species to play a key role in delivering science-based conservation outcomes that protect NSW’s most threatened species and ecological communities. This is a unique opportunity to influence environmental decisions, build strong partnerships, and help safeguard biodiversity for future generations.
About the role
The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service has established a ground-breaking conservation partnership with Australian Wildlife Conservancy and Wild Deserts (a consortium between UNSW and Ecological Horizons). These 3 partnership sites are:
- Pilliga State Conservation Area, near Narrabri, north-west NSW – fenced area 5,800 hectares (National Parks and Wildlife Service in partnership with Australian Wildlife Conservancy)
- Sturt National Park, near Tibooburra, far north-west NSW – fenced area 4,000 hectares (National Parks and Wildlife Service in partnership with UNSW/Wild Deserts)
- Mallee Cliffs National Park, near Buronga, south-west NSW – fenced area 9,570 hectares (National Parks and Wildlife Service in partnership with Australian Wildlife Conservancy).
To date, 12 species listed as extinct in NSW, and the locally extinct plains mouse have been reintroduced at the partnership sites. Monitoring confirms these species are establishing populations and successfully reproducing, marking significant progress in conservation efforts.
As Senior Project Officer Threatened Species you will manage, coordinate, implement and evaluate the feral predator free area partnership projects, ensuring completion within required deadlines and achieve quality standards. You will be required to consult with stakeholders and apply their input into complex projects.
You’ll provide and apply expert scientific advice, and work closely with communities, stakeholders and partner organisations to achieve positive conservation outcomes.
This role offers a level of autonomy within agreed priorities, supported by senior leadership, and contributes to complex, high impact environmental decisions.
About you
We are looking for an enthusiastic and passionate Senior Project Officer with excellent project management, procurement and contract management experience, effective communication and collaboration skills. As Senior Project Officer Threatened Species you will be experienced in undertaking monitoring and research programs, and capable of data analysis to identify trends and emerging issues.
Knowledge and experience
- Experience developing, implementing and monitoring strategic and operational plans for the delivery of complex programs, with a demonstrated track record of providing direction and achieving results through multidisciplinary and geographically dispersed teams.
- Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to manage the people and financial resources of a team to consistently deliver against agreed performance.

- Current Australian Class C Drivers licence or equivalent and willingness to obtain a 4WD operation certificate.
