About the role
National Parks and Wildlife Service has a unique opportunity for a Supplementary Pest Control (SPC) Operations Supervisor to work as part of the team and contribute towards the conservation of the natural environment, flora, fauna and Aboriginal heritage. The role supervises volunteer shooters to ensure supplementary pest control (SPC) activities are undertaken safely and effectively with a strong focus on achieving a reduction in the impacts of pest animals on reserve values.
The role offers variety and includes responsibility for:
- Coordinating, liaising with and supervising volunteers and work crews
- Training staff and volunteers in pest animal control techniques and safe firearms use
- Undertaking monitoring, ground shooting, baiting and trapping programs identified in the regional pest management strategies
- Ensuring safe work procedures are followed to meet WH&S legislative requirements and compliance with NPWS Shooting Operations Plans
- Managing and reporting on work programs including undertaking administrative functions as required.
The role will require you to travel regularly for approximately one week every three weeks to work in remote locations.
About You
Your skills and knowledge of pest control and land management strategies will help build your success in this role. You'll create a positive, safe, diverse, and inclusive culture and be a strong decision-maker with the ability to think on your feet, you have a genuine interest in teamwork and collaboration. Your fitness and enthusiasm will enable you to thrive and succeed in this diverse, fast-paced role. The ideal candidate will have a strong working knowledge of legislation relating to firearms and previous experience in pest animal and national park or other natural/rural area pest management. You will also have a demonstrated ability to promote a culture of integrity and professionalism in teams, with a focus on helping others understand their obligations to comply with legislation, policies, guidelines and codes of conduct.
Essential requirements:
- Possession of a current firearms licence and demonstrated ability and experience in the safe use of firearms for pest animal control.
- Current First Aid Certificate and current Australian drivers licence including capacity for four-wheel driving and willingness to fly in light aircraft.
NOTE: Successful applicants must obtain Senior First Aid, cross-cut chainsaw certification and 4WD certification within the first three-months of commencing in the role.
This is a physically active role suited to candidates of all genders who are fit, enjoy working outdoors as part of a team, and are eager to learn and develop the skills and qualifications needed to contribute toward improving and maintaining some of NSW’s most precious natural places.
All required training and assessments will be provided by NPWS.
