Our team is currently seeking to appoint an Executive Officer to work closely with the Chief Regulatory Officer within the Biodiversity and Heritage Regulator. This role provides high-level executive, strategic and project support and plays a key part in enabling effective decision‑making across the Regulator’s functions.
In this role, you will act as a trusted adviser and central point of coordination for the Chief Regulatory Officer. You will prepare high‑quality briefings, correspondence and reports, manage sensitive issues, and coordinate responses to internal and external stakeholders, including ministerial offices. You will contribute to and lead strategic and operational projects, support planning and reporting, and help strengthen systems and ways of working across the business. The team operates in a fast‑paced, collaborative environment where accuracy, sound judgement and professionalism are highly valued.
About You
You are an experienced executive or senior business support professional who is comfortable working closely with senior leaders in a complex regulatory environment. You have a strong track record in preparing clear, well‑reasoned briefings, reports and advice on complex matters, often within tight timeframes. You understand how government operates and are familiar with public sector processes, including ministerial and parliamentary requirements. You bring a structured approach to planning and project work, with the ability to track progress, manage risks and support delivery against organisational priorities.
You have a track record of anticipating and addressing contentious issues and providing accurate advice on complex issues and legislation, often within tight timeframes, given the need to collect and assimilate information from a variety of different sources whilst maintaining confidentiality and exercising diplomacy.
Equally important, you build strong working relationships and communicate with confidence and tact. You can deal with sensitive or contentious issues calmly and professionally, and you know how to adjust your communication style for different audiences. You are organised, adaptable and able to manage competing priorities without losing sight of detail or quality. If you enjoy working in a role that combines strategic thinking with hands‑on execution, and you value integrity, collaboration and practical problem‑solving, this role will suit you well.

BHR regulatory functions include biodiversity conservation compliance, heritage regulation, wildlife licensing and management, animal research ethics, and commercial plant licensing. These functions support the protection and restoration of the natural environment, and the conservation of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal cultural heritage.
The BHR supports the effective delivery of regulatory outcomes by providing licensing and approval, investigations and enforcement, engagement and education, specialist policy, capability, systems and data, governance, audit and assurance functions to operational teams across the department.
