Unique opportunity to play a key role in a high-impact Communications team within the Net Zero Commission
- Temporary opportunity for up to 12 months
- Full-time at 35 hours per week plus FlexTime
- Located in Parramatta with hybrid working supported
- Salary ranges from $138,455 to $152,686 + super
The Net Zero Commission is seeking a strategic and experienced Senior Communications Advisor to help shape and deliver high impact communications that support NSW’s transition to a net zero future.
About The Role
In this role, you’ll develop and deliver customer-focused communication and media strategies that position the Net Zero Commission as a trusted, independent source of expert advice and education. You will work in a small team as well as across different teams in the Commission.
You’ll lead the creation of strategic messaging and high-quality content to support public consultations, engagement campaigns, progress reporting, and educational initiatives. You will proactively manage media relations including developing media releases, pitching stories, preparing spokespeople and providing strategic advice and managing media issues. You’ll also produce engaging content across the Commission’s digital and social media channels and build strong relationships across government and external stakeholders to support the Commission’s strategic goals. With a focus on data-driven decision-making, you’ll monitor and apply insights to continuously refine and strengthen communications activities.
About You
We’re looking for a strategic and experienced communications professional with a strong track record in delivering impactful communications and media strategies. You’ll bring exceptional writing skills, with the ability to translate complex information into plain language and, engaging content. You’ll have strong media relations experience including working with journalists, delivering proactive media outcomes.
You’ll have experience in communication of climate change or environmental sustainability topics, along with the ability to influence and provide strategic advice to senior stakeholders. Experience working with a board or commission is highly regarded, as you’ll play a key role in shaping how the Net Zero Commission engages with the public, government, and industry.
Essential Requirements
- Tertiary qualifications in communications or other relevant discipline and/or equivalent relevant experience.

Who we are
The Net Zero Commission is an independent advisory body established under the Climate Change (Net Zero Future) Act 2023 to guide NSW’s climate response. Its core responsibilities include monitoring and reporting on the State’s progress toward emissions reduction targets and climate adaptation, providing expert advice and recommendations to the Minister, and promoting climate action across government, industry, and the community. Made up of up to eight Commissioners and accountable to the NSW Parliament, the Commission is supported by the Office of the Net Zero Commission within DCCEEW, which coordinates its work and serves as the main point of contact for public and government engagement.
The Commission is part of The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) - which works to protect the state’s environment and heritage. It leads the way on climate change, driving the sustainable transition to a net zero economy, powered by affordable, reliable, and clean energy.
