  • Salary relative to experience and ranges from $138,454 to $152,686 plus employer’s contribution to superannuation and annual leave loading

 

The NSW Biodiversity Conservation Trust (BCT), as part of the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW), seeking to appoint a Team Leader to join our Northern Inland team. 

 

This is a targeted role under GSE Rule 26 and Aboriginal people are encouraged to apply.

 

About the role

As team leader, you will work alongside the Northern Inland Regional Manager, to lead and support a high performing team of conservation professionals, providing day-to-day leadership, technical guidance and quality assurance across private land conservation programs in the BCT’s Northern Inland region. Managing a team of up to five staff, you will play a key role in delivering biodiversity initiatives, supporting landholders and stakeholders, and ensuring projects are delivered efficiently, effectively and to a high standard.

 

This is a diverse and rewarding leadership opportunity that combines people management with hands-on conservation delivery. You will lead strategic projects, provide technical oversight of key outputs including annual reports and conservation agreement development, and support your team to navigate complex issues with confidence and consistency. You’ll guide a committed team in partnership with the Northern Inland Regional Manager, overseeing on-ground conservation projects. Working closely with landholders, partners and stakeholders, you will help deliver impactful biodiversity initiatives and contribute to the protection and stewardship of some of the region’s significant natural assets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor and manage a team of up to five conservation professionals.
  • Provide technical oversight, quality assurance and consistency across staff outputs, including annual reporting and conservation agreement development.
  • Assist with planning and delivery of Private Land Conservation programs within the region
  • Oversee the delivery of on-ground conservation projects, ensuring outcomes are achieved effectively and to a high standard.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with landholders, partners and stakeholders to establish and manage conservation agreements.
  • Coordinate and deliver projects and programs within agreed scope, timeframes and budgets.
  • Work collaboratively with the Northern Inland Regional Manager to drive strategic priorities and conservation outcomes across the region.

 

About You

We are seeking a motivated and experienced professional who is passionate about environmental conservation and delivering outcomes in partnership with landholders.

 

You will bring:

  • Demonstrated experience in environmental, biodiversity conservation or natural resource management
  • Proven leadership experience in managing and supporting multidisciplinary geographically dispersed teams
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and deliver timely results
  • A collaborative approach, with excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Sound problem-solving and organisational skills, with a proactive and solutions-focused mindset.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to quality, accuracy and compliance
  • The ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures and organisational processes consistently.
  • A motivated, adaptable and professional approach, with a passion for achieving positive biodiversity outcomes.

 

Key knowledge and experience

  • Experience in managing multidisciplinary teams in natural resource management or biodiversity conservation.

 

Essential Requirements:

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Relevant tertiary qualification and/or experience in natural resource management or biodiversity
  • A current driver’s licence and willingness to travel.

The New South Wales Biodiversity Conservation Trust (BCT) is a not-for-profit statutory body, established under Part 10 of the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016 and managed by a Board appointed by the Minister for the Environment.

 

The Trust’s roles are to support and encourage landholders to enter into agreements to conserve and protect biodiversity on private land, guided by the government’s Biodiversity Conservation Investment Strategy; secure biodiversity offsets when developers choose to pay into the Biodiversity Conservation Fund; and other activities that promote greater awareness of, appreciation and understanding of, biodiversity and the importance of conserving it.

 

We acknowledge the ongoing custodial responsibilities of the Aboriginal peoples of NSW to care for Country and are committed to establishing meaningful partnerships with Aboriginal peoples in the management of the environment.

 

Participation in the NSW Biodiversity Offsets Scheme (BOS) and the BCT’s private land conservation (PLC) programs

The successful applicant for this role will be required to declare any conflict of interests related to the Biodiversity Offsets Scheme, as defined in the Biodiversity Offsets Scheme Conflict of Interests Protocol. This ensures the department is made aware of potential conflicts of interest so they can be appropriately managed.

Where an applicant has a high-risk “defined interest” in the Biodiversity Offsets Scheme, they may be required to divest this interest before being employed by the department.

The BCT also has restrictions on staff participation in its funded PLC programs. No additional funding, beyond that already agreed to by the BCT, may be sought or approved during time as a BCT employee or for a 12-month period following termination of employment.
