Our Water Wetlands and Coastal Science Branch is currently seeking to appoint a Scientist- Wetland Ecosystem Modeller to be part of our team dedicated to monitoring, evaluating and reporting on the health of iconic wetlands in the Murray-Darling Basin.
The role focuses on developing advanced modelling, remote sensing and spatial analytical tools that improve understanding of wetland hydrology, ecosystem processes and ecological responses. You will work with high‑performance computing environments, Python‑based analytical workflows, satellite and drone imagery, and diverse environmental datasets to build automated methods and predictive models that support environmental water management and Basin‑wide scientific reporting. Collaboration across scientific disciplines is central to the role, ensuring the delivery of high‑quality evidence that informs DCCEEW programs and enhances wetland monitoring and evaluation.
About You
You will have strong capability in Python‑based environmental modelling, with experience analysing complex geospatial, hydrological and ecological datasets. You’re confident working with remote sensing, drone‑derived imagery and spatial analysis tools such as ArcGIS Pro or QGIS, and you bring a solid understanding of wetland ecosystem processes—particularly those of the Murray–Darling Basin. You can design and maintain modelling frameworks, automated workflows and robust data management practices that support wetland monitoring and reporting.
You’ll also have experience in field‑based wetland monitoring, including work in remote inland environments and, ideally, conducting drone‑based wetland surveys. A relevant science degree, strong problem‑solving skills, a valid driver’s licence and a willingness to travel for short field trips are essential. This role offers the chance to apply your technical expertise within a collaborative team, contributing to innovative modelling and evaluation of wetland ecosystems across NSW.
Key knowledge and experience
- Demonstrated expertise in computer-based modelling and analysis of complex geospatial, hydrological and ecological datasets.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in data management, remote sensing, spatial analysis, biostatistical software programs and advanced scripting.
- Demonstrated experience developing, implementing and improving wetland ecosystem modelling frameworks and automated workflows using large and complex datasets.
- Demonstrated experience in scientific field work related to wetland ecosystem monitoring or equivalent.
- Demonstrated knowledge of wetland ecosystem processes and the floodplain and wetland ecosystems of the Murray-Darling Basin.
Essential requirements
- A science degree or postgraduate degree in environmental science or related discipline.
- Extensive experience demonstrated in Python-based modelling and analysis of complex wetland geospatial and ecological datasets.
- Demonstrated experience in spatio-temporal data management and problem solving with complex environmental datasets.
- Demonstrated experience with remote sensing, spatial analysis and spatial data management using Arc Pro, QGIS or similar software.
- Demonstrated experience of field work monitoring wetland ecosystems of the Murray-Darling Basin.
- Willingness to travel to remote inland locations intermittently (up to 5 days at times) to conduct wetland surveys.
- Demonstrated experience conducting drone-based wetland surveys and image processing. RePL certification highly desirable.
- A valid Australian Drivers License.
