About the role
National Parks and Wildlife Service has a unique opportunity for a Field Officer 1-4 to work as part of the team and contribute towards the conservation of the natural environment, flora, fauna and Aboriginal heritage.
This is a targeted role under GSE Rule 26, and Aboriginal people are encouraged to apply.
Join the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) as a Field Officer and play an important role in caring for Country across the Hay area and surrounding national parks and reserves. Working within a dedicated operational team, you will contribute to the conservation and protection of natural and cultural heritage through a diverse range of field activities including park maintenance, visitor services, fire management, pest and weed control, threatened species conservation and cultural heritage protection.
Working in a dynamic outdoor environment, no two days are the same. From operating plant and equipment and maintaining visitor facilities to participating in wildfire response and conservation projects, you'll play an important role in ensuring parks remain safe, accessible and protected for future generations.
This is a rewarding opportunity to combine practical, hands-on outdoor work with meaningful environmental and cultural outcomes. You will work closely with Aboriginal communities, Traditional Owners and NPWS staff to support the ongoing protection of parks and cultural landscapes, helping ensure Country is cared for now and into the future.
About You
We're looking for an enthusiastic and practical team player who enjoys working outdoors, takes pride in delivering quality work and is committed to protecting the environment. You may already have experience in land management, conservation, construction, agriculture, parks operations or a similar field, or you may be seeking an opportunity to build a rewarding career with NPWS. Most importantly, you'll bring a strong work ethic, a willingness to learn and a commitment to workplace safety.
The ideal candidate is resilient, safety-focused and enjoys working as part of a team while also being comfortable working independently in remote environments. You will have strong communication skills, a positive attitude and the ability to build respectful relationships with Aboriginal communities, park visitors and stakeholders. This role offers a unique opportunity to develop your career with NPWS while contributing to the protection of some of western NSW's most significant natural and cultural landscapes.
Key knowledge and experience
- Willingness to fly in light aircraft.
- Willingness to exercise delegated authority for compliance activities.
- Ability to use computer systems, tablet devices and communicate and operate a two-way radio.
- Ability to appropriately operate and maintain a range of plant and equipment, including but not limited to conditionally registered vehicles, watercraft (non-coxswain), lifting apparatus and appropriate plant.
Essential requirements - As detailed in the Role Description
- Current Australian Class C Drivers licence or equivalent.
- Ability to obtain Medium Rigid (MR) Licence and operate MR vehicles, if required.
- Obtain a Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) Recovery Certification (Statement of Attainment) within 6 months of commencement as arranged by NPWS with compliant providers.
- First Aid certificate obtained within 6 months of commencement.
- Certification (Statement of Attainment) to operate a chainsaw to level 1 crosscut standard obtained within 12 months from commencement.
This is a physically active role suited to candidates of all genders who are fit, enjoy working outdoors as part of a team, and are eager to learn and develop the skills and qualifications needed to contribute toward improving and maintaining NSW’s most precious natural places.
Successful candidates must meet the requirements of a pre-employment medical assessment during the recruitment process, including obtaining medical clearance to perform the duties associated with the role.
