Our Natural Capital Markets and Accounts Branch is currently seeking to appoint a Senior Policy Officer in the Nature Finance & Disclosure Policy team. The team works in an emerging area of environmental policy, focused on how natural capital, nature-related risks and opportunities, disclosure and market settings can support better decisions for nature and NSW.
This is a policy role with a strong delivery focus. You will contribute to advice, written products and implementation planning, while also coordinating inputs, engaging stakeholders and helping organise work where the approach may still be developing. The role is well suited to someone who can work with complex ideas, but is just as comfortable turning those ideas into clear next steps, practical options and useful material for decision-makers.
About you
You bring experience in policy, strategy, project coordination, research, stakeholder engagement or related work, ideally in a complex government, environmental, climate, finance, market, regulatory or natural resource management context. You do not need to be a technical specialist in natural capital, nature finance or disclosure, but you will be comfortable learning quickly, asking good questions and working with concepts that are still being shaped.
This role will suit someone who enjoys working in the space between policy development and practical delivery. You can bring structure to ambiguous work, coordinate input from others and help turn early ideas into useful products, advice or implementation plans. You are willing to be hands-on: drafting, following up, synthesising information, preparing material for senior audiences and helping clarify what needs to happen next.
You work well with others because you listen carefully, adapt your communication style and build trust across different perspectives. You are comfortable balancing quality with practicality, and you know when to seek more evidence, when to test an assumption and when to produce a clear working draft that helps move a decision forward.
Key knowledge and experience
- Understanding of the machinery of government and the policy process, or demonstrated ability to acquire this knowledge quickly.
- Experience preparing clear advice, briefings, summaries or project material for senior decision-makers.
- Experience working across policy, strategy, project coordination, research or implementation planning in a complex or emerging area.
- Ability to bring structure to ambiguous work by clarifying issues, organising information and identifying practical next steps.
- Experience building relationships, engaging stakeholders and coordinating input across teams or disciplines.
Essential requirements
- Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline and/or equivalent experience.
