About Lord Howe Island
Lord Howe Island is located in the South Pacific Ocean approximately 700km north-east of Sydney and is part of NSW. The island has a high proportion of rare and endemic birds, plants, and invertebrates, and has the southernmost coral reef in the world. Three-quarters of the island is within the Permanent Park Preserve, which is managed similarly to a national park. There are approximately 445 residents, and tourism is the major industry and source of income on the island. Approximately 16,000 people visit the island each year and there are 21 accommodation lodges.
The Lord Howe Island Board (the Board) is a statutory authority established under the provisions of the Lord Howe Island Act 1953. The Board is responsible to the NSW Minister for the Environment and comprises four islanders elected by the local community and three members appointed by the Minister. It is charged with the care, control and management of the island and the affairs and trade of the island. It is also responsible for the care, improvement and welfare of the island and residents.
The Lord Howe Island Board is part of the Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water cluster. Lord Howe Island Board members of staff are employed under section 21 of the Government Sector Employment and Management Act by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW). About the role
Imagine starting your day in one of the world's most spectacular natural environments, helping to protect and conserve a World Heritage-listed island renowned for its unique biodiversity and breathtaking landscapes. As a Ranger on Lord Howe Island, you'll play a hands-on role managing and preserving the island's natural and cultural heritage. From environmental conservation, threatened species management and ecological restoration to wildlife protection, biosecurity, visitor management and community engagement, this is a diverse and rewarding role where no two days are the same.
Working as part of a dedicated team, you'll contribute to environmental programs and projects that have a lasting impact on one of NSW's most treasured natural places. You'll collaborate with researchers, volunteers, contractors and the local community while helping maintain the island's exceptional environmental values for future generations.
Knowledge and experience
We're seeking an enthusiastic and adaptable environmental professional who enjoys working outdoors, thrives in a team environment and is passionate about conservation. You'll bring experience in environmental, park or natural resource management, along with strong project management, problem-solving skills, sound judgement and the ability to build positive relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders.
The ideal candidate is a clear communicator who can engage respectfully with community members, researchers and visitors, while confidently balancing conservation outcomes with community needs. Essential requirements - As detailed in the Role Description
- Associate degree in natural resource management or an equivalent relevant qualification.
- Experience in environmental/park management, including integrated pest species identification and control, risk assessment, community and environmental education and awareness programs and ecological restoration practices.
- Experience in project and financial management.
- Knowledge and ability to interpret state, federal and local government legislation and policies.
- Well-developed written and verbal communication skills, proven skills and experience in public relations, liaison, and negotiation.
- Well-developed computer skills including demonstrated experience in the use and management of GIS and databases.
- Holder of a current motor vehicle driver's license.
- Ability to obtain a boat license, scientific diving certificate, ABBBS A-Class banding certificate, First Aid Certificate and NSW Firearms License and a willingness to participate in incident management.
This is a physically active role suited to candidates of all genders who are fit, enjoy working outdoors as part of a team, and are eager to learn and develop the skills and qualifications needed to contribute toward improving and maintaining some of NSW’s most precious natural places.
