The opportunity

We have an exciting new opportunity to join our close-knit, friendly and high-performing team as a Senior Investigator within our Regulatory Operations division at the NSW EPA.

In this role, you will support and conduct complex investigations into serious and major environmental and conservation incidents and suspected breaches of relevant legislation. You will work across a range of sensitive and often complex matters, using your investigative expertise to gather evidence, develop investigative strategies and support effective enforcement outcomes.

You will also provide trusted investigative advice to key stakeholders, prepare complex reports and briefs of evidence, and contribute to the development of enforcement policies, strategies and operational approaches.

An important part of the role is sharing your expertise with others. You will have the opportunity to develop and deliver investigation and enforcement training, helping to build investigative capability across the EPA and other cluster agencies.

About you

You are an experienced investigator who brings sound judgement, strong analytical skills and the ability to manage complex and sensitive investigations.

You will have:

  • Demonstrated experience conducting complex investigations, particularly in relation to serious or significant offences, incidents or regulatory matters.
  • Strong investigative skills, including the ability to develop effective investigative strategies, gather and assess evidence, and identify appropriate courses of action.
  • Willingness and capacity to attend Court hearings to give evidence and support prosecutions as required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare high-quality reports, briefs and other complex investigative material.
  • The ability to provide clear, independent and well-reasoned advice on sensitive, contentious or potentially volatile matters.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills and the ability to work collaboratively with Legal Officers, operational teams and other agencies.
  • Sound judgement and the ability to remain calm, objective and focused when dealing with complex or challenging situations.
  • Experience developing or delivering training, education or capability-building activities would be highly regarded.
  • A commitment to achieving fair, lawful and effective enforcement outcomes that support environmental compliance and protect the community and environment.

Essential Requirements

  • Current Australian Class C Driver's Licence.
  • Travel and work after hours when required.

The Investigation and Compliance team lead proactive, intelligence driven compliance investigations, regulate environmental compliance and conduct waste levy audits.
