The Department of Public Safety is currently accepting applications for the position of Community Resource Officer (CRO) Patrol/Communication. The CRO Patrol/Communication is essential to the success of our community caretaking model and community engagement role. They are responsible for responding to routine and emergency calls for service, conducting initial and follow up investigations as appropriate, responding to medical incidents and both fire and intrusion alarms. They are also responsible for the efficient and effective operation of the multi-faceted Swarthmore College Communication Center. The position maintains control of incoming telephone calls while providing direction for outgoing calls that are not direct dial accessible. The Officer courteously provides information and assistance by telephone, radio or in person to faculty, staff, students, and visitors. The dispatch of internal communications, monitoring of CCTV, Access Control and both fire and intrusion alarms, as well as key control of organizations’ keys are all integral functions of the position. Coordination of communication or responding to incidents under demanding emergency conditions is an essential skill. Performs other duties as assigned. |
Greenhouse & Garden Manager

The Greenhouse and Garden Manager (GGM) allocates their time between the Biology Department Greenhouse and the Environmental Studies Program Our Food Garden. The GGM is supervised by both department chairs, with the Biology Department chair serving as the GGM’s reporting supervisor. The position is divided as 57% biology and 43% ENVS.
Greenhouse: The GGM is responsible for managing and supervising the Biology Department greenhouse (GH) and operations in order to support the biology curriculum, the living biology plant collection, and research activities. The GGM will work closely with faculty, staff, and students to ensure that plants grown in the GH for courses and research are healthy and vigorous. The position involves direct plant care, operation and maintenance of the GH, and supervision of part-time and student employees.
Gardens: The GGM focuses on supporting the Environmental Studies Program curriculum through year-round management of the Our Food Garden (OFG) and development of operations that connect students and the Swarthmore community to agriculture. The GGM will work closely with faculty, staff, and students to ensure that the OFG is healthy, productive, and educational, using agroecological practices when possible. They will work to create a safe, accessible, and visually engaging learning environment. |
Scott Arboretum Summer Intern

The Scott Arboretum Summer Internship offers a unique work experience in a campus arboretum well-suited to an individual interested in a career in ornamental/public horticulture. On-the-job training includes exposure to garden maintenance, plant records and curation, plant propagation, and volunteer interaction. Summer interns rotate with gardening staff affording exposure to all areas of the Scott Arboretum including but not limited to The Dean Bond Rose Garden, gardens of the Cunningham House and Wister Center, Fragrance Garden, Cosby Courtyard, Harry Wood Garden, green roofs, and seasonal container gardening featuring annuals and tropical plants. Other opportunities include: admittance to the Woody Plant Conference, weekly plant walks, lunch with the Director, field excursions to visit area gardens, informational sessions with staff, equipment use demonstration, and creating written and video content for our Garden Seeds blog.
The internship is a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 28 weeks; typically starting in March to May and ending Aug. to Oct. Work hours are 8:30 am - 4:30 pm, with occasional evening and weekend hours depending on events. |

The Scott Arboretum Public Horticulture Internship offers a unique opportunity for individuals pursuing a career in public horticulture. The intern will have opportunities to meet and work with a variety of professionals in the Philadelphia region, an area rich in public gardens. Activities include working with gardening staff and volunteers (three mornings/week); special project development and area garden work; participates in summer intern field trips and educational programming at the Scott Arboretum. Travel and professional development support of $6,000 for conferences, travel, and programs based on proposal approvals.

McCabe Library Access & User Services Specialist (Limited Term)

The Access and User Services Specialist (Limited Term) is a member of the team-based operation of McCabe Library’s Access and User Services (A&US) department responsible for ensuring patron access to library collections, services, and facilities. As a member of the department, the Specialist provides input into departmental policies and ensures their implementation.
This temporary position for the Swarthmore College Libraries will work at McCabe Library to assist in the day-to-day operations and customer support for the Libraries. Sustainable Capital Planning and Project Management (SCPPM) is seeking a Senior Project Manager to join our team of planners, project managers, and interior designers. The SCPPM department is responsible for all major and minor construction projects for Swarthmore College.
Reporting to the Director of Sustainable Capital Planning and Project Management (SCPPM), the Senior Project Manager position directs and manages new construction, renovation, user fit out, capital and campus renewal projects ranging in cost up to and often exceeding $5M and occasionally exceeding $50M. Typical assignments will include multiple projects with tight timelines, focused programs, challenging site logistics and fixed budgets. This position represents Swarthmore College to internal and external constituencies including faculty, staff, students, architects, engineers, trade partners, and local government on a variety of issues related to project development and delivery.

The Smith Materials lab is seeking a highly motivated researcher with a PhD in materials science, physics, applied physics, mechanical engineering, or closely related field. This DOE-funded position is for a research project aimed at investigating dynamics in glass-forming liquids. Ongoing projects study a variety of glasses including metallic, oxide, molecular, and chalcogenide glasses. Neutron scattering experiments, with a focus on quasielastic and inelastic measurements, are performed at national user facilities, particularly the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The postdoctoral fellow will be encouraged to lead the project, collaborate with the PI and undergraduate students on high-impact publications, and present at key conferences in the field. Applicants with strong experimental skills and experience in neutron or X-ray scattering are especially encouraged to apply.
The Smith Materials Lab is an interdisciplinary group of undergraduate students and research staff that thrives on teamwork and welcomes diverse candidates to join us. The On-Call Public Safety Communication Officer (PSCO) is a key role in Department's responsibility for the safety and well-being of Swarthmore College students, campus property, community members, and visitors. The Communication Officer will be responsible for courteous and active engagement with the community, through effective communication verbally and in writing. As a Communication Officer, you are the first contact for internal and external interactions and incidents involving the College and provide a service for routine and emergency calls to the College. You will receive initial information and take appropriate action to resolve or address the situation. You will manage the functions of the communication center as well as respond to radio transmissions and in person requests for assistance. You will also need to be able to have clear communication, verbally and written, for making reports on incidents and investigations.
In this role, the primary duties of the PSCO are to assure continuity of practices and effective communication service to/for the Swarthmore College Department of Public Safety Communications Center (SCDPSCC), the College community, and local law enforcement agencies. This position requires a high degree of community engagement, cultural competency, and ability to navigate complex protocols for effective decision making based upon Department and College guidelines. The ability to provide clear communication, often under pressure, in a multifaceted communication center and navigate a variety of technology. Personnel in this position are considered “essential” in that they support a 24 hour, 7 day per week communication center operation. |
