Position Summary: 

The Education Program Assistant-Temporary is primarily responsible for the administration (teaching) of science-based environmental educational and conservation programs and courses through the JSU Office of Strategic Partnerships and Special Projects and JSU Field Schools. Other responsibilities include the development of curriculum and programming. All activities are through primary coordination with FS Director and Assistant Director. Work is periodically reviewed for adherence to department/division goals and effectiveness of results. Reports to the Assistant Director of JSU Field Schools. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to effectively teach environmental education and outdoor education curriculum to students Pre-K-12th grades, college, and adults. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching for field trips and other events at the Little River Canyon Center. They must be innovative with students and curriculum.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Present and lead day, night, weekend programs, field trips, after school activities, hikes, workshops, outreach programs, and summer camps designed to meet the needs of a variety of age groups and interest levels.
  •  Review and update current curriculum and outreach programs if needed. Ensuring all classes have a written lesson plan that is stored as an electronic copy and hard copy.
  • Provide care for educational animals. This includes making sure all education animals have the required food and water and a clean-living environment. Provide proper documents whenever the education animals are fed, used for education classes, or have any noticeable health problems.
  • Assist with marketing program drafting press releases, posters, banners, social media posts, monthly newsletter, etc.
  • Provide quality customer service by taking responsibility for requests received regardless of media (telephone, e-mail, written correspondence, personal contact, etc.) so that an appropriate response is provided, the necessary steps are taken, and the information is shared to all necessary parties.
  • Perform room set-ups, occasional cleaning, and moderate lifting as needed.
  • Provide front desk interpretation as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by leadership.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Must be currently enrolled at Jacksonville State University in an undergraduate or graduate degree program in either science or education.
  • Interest in outdoor educational activities.
  • Extensive public speaking experience.
  • Ability to work nights and weekends as programs require.
  • Desire to work with a diverse population of students.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Previous teaching experience
