About the Department of Art 

The Department of Art at the University of Massachusetts Amherst offers post-secondary education in a full range of disciplines that include painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, animation, intermedia, design & technology, and art education. Interdisciplinary study is at the core of our philosophy, and we encourage students to pursue experience across art disciplines, as well as exploring the diverse fields of arts, humanities, and sciences open to them at this premier research university. We offer BFA Art & Design, BA Art, BFA Art Education, MFA Studio Art and MA Art Education programs.

 

Job Description                                     

The Department of Art is seeking a Director of the Herter Art Gallery. This is a 9-month 100% benefitted non-tenure track position with an initial appointment of one year which may be renewed. The primary mission of Herter Gallery is to arrange for the display and study of works of art consonant with the educational mission of the university’s Art Department. Exhibitions presented by the Gallery focus on a broad range of work created by both established and emerging artists, as well as regularly scheduled exhibitions by students and faculty from within the Art Department.

The successful candidate will contribute to the Department and the University community through his/her knowledge, expertise, and experience in curating contemporary art. The Director will be responsible for the exhibition program by working with students, faculty, and other artists and participants and for overseeing budgeting, public relations, and the daily operation of the Herter Art Gallery. The Director is expected to offer exhibitions that will become an important part of undergraduate and graduate studies in art and visual culture at the University.

The successful candidate will also be able to teach two undergraduate courses per semester that include writing for artists, professional practices, or studio courses. The person in this position will also participate in service to the department for the academic year. 

 

Minimum Requirements

  • MFA in Art or a Master’s degree in Art History or related field at the time of commencing the position; or professional experience equivalent to the advanced degree in the form of extensive publication and curating at reputable venues.
  • Experience in the field of curating art and/or publication of art history/theory/criticism.
  • 2-year teaching experience in art history or studio art.
  • Knowledge of current practices and issues in modern and contemporary art and visual culture.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience teaching professional practices or related courses.
  • Experience teaching writing courses for art students or related courses.

Additional Information

This is a full-time benefitted position with an initial appointment of one year. This is a nine-month academic year appointment. Salary is commensurate with experience
