General Summary: 

This role will be key in ensuring that all students at UMass Boston have equitable access to the Honors College, by creating clear pathways to join Honors for a wide range of students on campus, coordinating orientation and first-year programming, and mentoring students. This position will be key to promoting success and retention.

Recruitment and Admissions: This position will be responsible for recruiting and admitting a wide range of students to the Honors College, including first-time first-year students, continuing students, transfer students, participants in pre-collegiate and early-college programs, etc. The position will focus on providing equitable access to the Honors College for students from underrepresented groups, transfer students, Boston public school students, and students from pre-collegiate pipeline programs. This position will organize all aspects of the direct application process for prospective students, continuing students, and transfer students (including assessment of their previous experience as it relates to Honors College credits and requirements), and will track the diversity of each incoming class of Honors students. Such a role involves key coordination with a large number of offices on campus, including but not limited to SEAS (Student Equity, Access, and Success), Enrollment Management, pre-collegiate programs, and New Student Programs among others. As part of recruitment efforts, the position will coordinate the Honors portions of Open House and Welcome Day events, thereby ensuring that all prospective and accepted students are aware of the benefits of an Honors education, and that the Honors College experience is accessible to them.

First Year Experience and Programming: This position will coordinate and implement orientation programming and first-year experience programming designed to promote student success and retention. This will include university-wide programming – by interfacing with New Student Programs to coordinate the Honors portion of the Beacon Beginnings orientations – and also the coordination and implementation of Honors-specific programming during orientation and throughout the first-year experience.

Mentoring: This position will provide individual mentoring for a group of Honors students. Honors students receive holistic mentoring that involves providing guidance on Honors coursework, securing internships, research, and other hands-on experiences in order to prepare them for a Senior Honors Thesis.

With its mix of recruitment and admissions, coordination of first-year programming, and mentoring, this position will improve student success and enhance UMass Boston’s reputation in having an Honors College that provides rigorous interdisciplinary coursework and research opportunities to students across all majors, who reflect the campus-wide UMass Boston student body.

Examples of Duties: 

  • Engage in Honors College efforts in recruitment, admissions, and orientation programming across all pathways into the Honors College;
  • Serve as a liaison to offices including but not limited to SEAS (Student Equity, Access, and Success), Enrollment Management, pre-collegiate programs, and New Student Programs
  • Serve as the main contact for Honors for Open Houses (for prospective and transfer students) and Welcome Day (for accepted students), attending organizer meetings leading up to these events, coordinating the Honors portions of these events, and attending these in-person and virtual events 
  • Lead summer orientations; developing and coordinating Honors College first-year and second-year student programming, including Honors College orientation programming
  • Provide individual and group mentoring for Honors College students 
  • Collaborate with all Honors College staff to ensure student success and progression throughout their academic careers
  • Serve as a liaison to the Office of Assessment and Planning
  • Serve as a member of the Academic Policy Committee
  • Attend Advising Collaborative meetings
  • Conductg analysis on student success data using HelioCampus dashboards 
  • UtilizeStudent Success Hub tools, including Advising Case Management, to track student progress as needed
  • Provide support to the Dean of the Honors College and University Advancement to develop connections that may lead to student support through internships, field trips, scholarships, and career mentoring
  • Supervise the Student Marketing and Alumni Relations intern, who will work on duties including (but not limited to) the alumni newsletter
  • Engage Honors alumni through a strategic multi-faceted approach to alumni relations
  • Serve as the liaison for Beacon Pledge
  • Assist in establishing, developing, and maintaining partnerships with local companies, government agencies, and non-profit organizations

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelors degree and a minimum of 3-5 years of experience in an higher education setting with undergraduate student-centered position required. Master’s degree preferred.
