General Summary of Position:
The Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Lowell seeks a visionary leader for the position of department chair. The new chair will have the opportunity to lead the next stages of academic and research development and advance the reputation of the department. The appointment is expected to be at the level of Associate or Full Professor with tenure. The Department of Biomedical Engineering is located in UMass Lowell's Francis College of Engineering, a dynamic, growing college that prepares scientists and professionals in a wide range of engineering areas. The department currently has 11 faculty, including five new energetic and engaged tenure-track faculty that have been hired in the last three years. The new chair will contribute to the planned growth of the department and the hiring of new teaching and tenure-track faculty.
The department offers undergraduate and doctoral degrees in biomedical engineering, with concentrations in medical device development, cell and tissue engineering, and biomechanics. Educational strategies include classes taught by highly-qualified faculty, experiential learning, and hands-on laboratory experiences.
The chair's mission is to inspire and promote the academic and intellectual growth of the department, to ensure effective use of resources to meet the college goals, and to promote student success. An ambitious expansion of the research enterprise is a key goal for the new chair. The University of Massachusetts Lowell (UML) is a Carnegie Doctoral High Research (RU/H) university ranked in the top tier of US News' National Universities. The department currently has strong collaborations with the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School and the Massachusetts Medical Device Development (M2D2) Center.
The department’s research labs were completely renovated in 2019, and the university recently acquired state-of-the-art vivarium and animal imaging facilities with space for additional research labs. The department and college have leadership teams that support the chair in carrying out the academic mission of the department. This support includes two associate chairs, one each for the undergraduate and graduate curriculum needs, and administrative assistant and lab technician support.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):
- Applicants must have earned a doctoral degree in Biomedical Engineering or a closely related discipline
- Evidence of excellence in leadership and strong interpersonal skills
- Strong track record in externally-funded research
- Substantial publication record
- Demonstrated excellence in mentoring, teaching, and service
- The ability to work effectively with diverse groups and interdisciplinary teams
- Current rank of associate or full professor with tenure
- Experience in fostering partnerships within the university and with outside partners, such as industry, schools of medicine, clinics, and hospitals
- Experience in a prior leadership role in a 4-year research institution and ability to successfully collaborate with the faculty, the dean, and upper administration
- Experience recruiting faculty with strong research agendas and mentoring them through the tenure process
- Experience with undergraduate, graduate, and accredited programs, with the ability to develop, implement and evaluate curricula
- Candidates with experience in engineering education and the design of effective and inclusive pedagogical approaches will be given strong consideration.
