General Summary of the Position:

The Department of Biomedical & Nutritional Sciences (BNS) in the Zuckerberg College of Health Sciences (ZCHS) at the University of Massachusetts Lowell (UML) is seeking part-time Adjunct Instructors to teach undergraduate chemistry laboratory courses with a focus on the health sciences. This posting serves to build a pool of qualified candidates for current and future teaching needs. Courses may include: a one-semester introductory general-organic-biochemistry (GOB) laboratory course (HSCI.1900L), a higher-level two-semester GOB laboratory course sequence (HSCI.2530 and HSCI.2540), a one-semester organic chemistry laboratory course (BMSC.2440), and a one-semester analytical instrumentation laboratory course (BMSC.3630). Selected instructors will work collaboratively with, and under the guidance of, the course coordinator to ensure consistency, quality, and alignment with departmental goals. Teaching assignments may vary by semester depending on departmental needs.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in chemistry or a related science field that involves strong training in chemistry laboratory work, especially analytical, organic, and biochemistry.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in English, both verbal and written.
  • The ability to regularly commute to UMass Lowell South Campus for in-person instruction.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Candidates with previous teaching experience will be given priority.
  • Candidates with qualifications to teach in more than one area will be given priority.
  • Candidates with a master’s or doctoral degree, or with substantial experience in chemistry laboratory work are most desirable.
  • Candidates having MLS(ASCP) certification would be ideal, since they could also contribute to the Medical Laboratory Science program in the department.

Special Instructions to Applicants:

This is a part-time, non-benefited position under the Union of Adjunct Faculty, Local 1596, UAW. For Adjunct Faculty salaries, please refer to the salary chart for the rates. Adjunct Faculty Salary Chart (pdf) - September 2025

Please include a current CV and cover letter with your application. The names and contact information of three references may be requested upon completion of a screening interview. Although submission of teaching evaluations and evidence of teaching is optional, including them may increase the odds of being hired. Applicants will be reviewed if/when needed until a hire is made. The position may close within one year if it yields no hires, at which time the posting would be refreshed to rebuild the adjunct pool.
