Why your role matters
The Lead Project Manager - People & Culture Strategic Projects at UNSW will lead and manage key initiatives aligned with the university’s strategic priorities. This role involves planning, team building, project oversight, stakeholder engagement, and quality assurance to ensure projects support People & Culture’s goals. Reporting to the Director of P&C Strategic Projects, the role also supervises one direct report.
About the Role
You will be required to undertake and have experience in the following areas of expertise:
- Lead the planning and implementation of projects and programs for the P&C Group and facilitate the definition of each project’s scope, objectives and deliverables.
- Apply project management principles, tools, and governance frameworks to ensure consistency and effectiveness across all project activities.
- Proactively lead and manage adherence to UNSW governance frameworks and pathways, maintaining consistency and compliance in project execution.
- Provide strategic direction in leading project teams and engage both internal and external stakeholders through clear communication, regular progress reporting, and collaborative problem solving to drive successful project outcomes.
- Manage interdependencies across Projects and maximise synergies and reduce risks of overlapping efforts and identify opportunities for process optimisation, and scalable P&C systems and processes.
- Ensure project closure processes are conducted, including post-implementation reviews, lessons learned, and handover to business-as-usual operations.
- Proactively identify and manage project dependencies, risks, issues and change requests, ensuring comprehensive mitigation strategies, contingency plans, and financial oversight are maintained.
- Manage the scope, cost, quality and timeliness of capabilities delivered by projects, ensuring cost control and financial accountability by monitoring expenditure and financial performance against approved budgets, addressing variances as needed.
- Create and maintain project artifacts such as status reports, schedules, governance documents and a RAID register.
- Oversee and finalise effective communications with key stakeholders, both internal and external to the project plan and provide influential input with stakeholders to achieve project outcomes.
About You
- Relevant tertiary qualification with extensive experience or equivalent competence gained through any combination of education, training and experience.
- Proven advanced project management experience, with an in-depth understanding of the project life cycle and strategic development of project plans, objectives and documentation.
- Excellent consultation, influencing and negotiation skills and proven ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders to achieve successful outcomes.
- Demonstrated strong analytical and problem-solving skills and proven capacity to exercise initiative, flexibility and to be proactive in development of robust solutions to problems.
- Advanced written and verbal communication skills, with a high level of attention to detail for deliverables produced.
- Demonstrated success working effectively and collaboratively on initiatives with a range of people at different levels within an organisation.
- Proven knowledge of budgeting and resource allocation procedures.
- Ability to apply judgement, creativity, and flexibility to generate new and innovative ideas and approaches and to solve complex problems.
- High level of experience working with a range of computer systems and applications, including MS Project, PowerPoint, Vision and SharePoint.
- Excellent time management skills, with a demonstrated ability to respond to changing priorities, manage multiple tasks and meet competing deadlines by using judgement and initiative
