Why Your Role Matters:
The Financial Control & Compliance function has accountability for the university-wide financial control environment and associated compliance policies and processes, including statutory financial reporting and external audit, controlled entity accounting and reporting, technical accounting advisory, infrastructure and asset accounting, and tax management and advisory.

Financial Control Accountants provide high quality, specialised and complex accounting support in accordance with UNSW policies, procedures and processes with an objective of maintaining and/or improving the financial control and compliance environment across the University. This position works across all teams within the Financial Control & Compliance function.

The Financial Control Accountant reports to the relevant Manager and has no direct reports.

Responsibilities Summary:

  • Prepare and deliver standard month-end and year-end financial reports and other relevant reporting to ensure data reported is accurate and deadlines are met
  • Collaborate with colleagues to provide value adding insights, accounting support and advice to internal and external stakeholders, including technical accounting assessments and the proactive assessment and coordination of the implementation of changes in upcoming accounting standards, to ensure best practice customer service is maintained
  • Maintain a broad, contemporary and substantial level of technical accounting knowledge and skills, including an in-depth knowledge of Australian Accounting Standards and Interpretations as well as relevant legislation and regulatory requirements, to ensure Finance systems and processes are best practice and aligned with statutory standards
  • Act as a subject matter expert, in area of responsibility, by providing accurate, timely responses to, sometimes complex, questions and queries to ensure customer service standards are maintained or exceeded
  • Recommend improvements to processes where opportunities to develop more effective or efficient ways of operating are identified to ensure a culture of continuous improvement is fostered and maintained.

Skills and Experience Summary:

  • Tertiary qualification in Accounting and CA/CPA qualified, with demonstrated successful experience in a similar role in an Accounting/Financial context with ongoing high performance
  • Demonstrated ability to proactively and successfully analyse and resolve difficult issues, such as the resolution of more complex ledger accounts, in a timely and efficient manner
  • In-depth knowledge of Microsoft Excel and other relevant programs, as well as demonstrated substantial experience with a variety of finance systems
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of technical accounting including experience in applying the relevant Australian Accounting Standards and Interpretations and providing the required accounting support to stakeholders
  • Understanding of financial risks and relevant mitigating controls across end-to-end financial processes
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and the ability to prioritise multiple tasks
  • Well-developed verbal and written communication skills to efficiently and professionally manage stakeholder expectations, achieve Finance outcomes, and work collaboratively in a team environment
