The Business Systems Analyst collaborates with stakeholders across the University to analyse business and functional needs, define system requirements, and support the delivery, operations and improvement of business systems, particularly within the student services domain. The role operates with a solid degree of autonomy and accountability, leading analysis activities, contributing to solution design, and supporting system testing and integration efforts. The position develops strong functional knowledge of the systems it supports and applies that knowledge to deliver effective and sustainable business outcomes.

Accountabilities:

• Lead stakeholder engagement to understand business challenges, gather requirements, and translate them into clear and structured outputs.
• Analyse and document business processes, identifying opportunities for optimisation and improved system utilisation across the university.
• Lead functional analysis for assigned systems, developing strong knowledge of system capabilities and dependencies.
• Drive and influence solution design by working closely with technical teams to ensure alignment with business needs.
• Plan and strategize system and integration testing activities, including test design, execution oversight, and defect management.
• Perform data analysis to support reporting, validation, and business decision-making, informing strategic and operational improvements.
• Apply critical thinking and sound judgement in analysis and testing by validating assumptions, identifying constraints, dependencies, risks, and edge cases, and proactively seeking clarification or additional information where required.
• Maintain key documentation including requirements, process flows, system artefacts, and testing outputs.
• Advise and guide system enhancements, vendor interactions, implementation activities, and practical collaboration with developers where required.
• Oversee functional support and complex issue resolution, ensuring effective triage, escalation, and root cause analysis.
• Work closely with stakeholders to build strong relationships, agree on outcomes, and balance business and technical priorities.
• Mentor and support associate analysts, providing expertise on analysis and delivery activities, working to contribute to capability uplift within the team.
• Contribute to continuous improvement by exploring emerging industry, technology trends.
• Apply contemporary business analysis practices, digital tools, and emerging technologies including AI where appropriate to improve analysis quality, delivery efficiency, and business outcomes.
• Ensure compliance with university policies, data governance, security standards, and modern ways of working that support innovation and continuous improvement and contribute to the development and refinement of these standards where required. • Align with and actively demonstrate the Code of Conduct and Values
• Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the psychosocial or physical health and safety of yourself or other.

Who you are:

• Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline or equivalent combination of education and professional experience.
• Extensive experience in business analysis, systems analysis, or a related role in a complex environment.
• Demonstrated experience in requirements gathering, process analysis, functional analysis, and solution support including ownership of outcomes and delivery of system improvements.
• Experience supporting system and integration testing activities, including test design, execution, and defect management. • Highly developed stakeholder engagement and communication skills, with the ability to influence, negotiate, and provide specialist advice across business and technical domains.
• Demonstrated ability to work with a solid degree of autonomy and accountability, with high attention to detail and the ability to manage competing priorities, all whilst contributing to team delivery outcomes.
• Exposure to standard approaches to documenting business and system processes, such as BPMN, Flowcharting, UML models, etc. • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to question assumptions, work through ambiguity, identify constraints and edge cases, and ensure solutions are fit for purpose in complex business and system contexts.
• Experience with enterprise systems or platforms such as student systems, CRM, workflow tools, or related platforms is desirable. • Exposure to data analysis or reporting tools such as SQL, Power BI, or equivalent is desirable.
• Demonstrated ability to use contemporary digital tools, business analysis practices, and emerging technologies including AI where appropriate to support efficient, evidence-based, and high-quality delivery outcomes.
• Familiarity with Agile, Waterfall, or hybrid delivery methodologies.
• An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
• Knowledge of health & safety (psychosocial and physical) responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
