JOB SUMMARY:

Oversees the activities and development of the Technical Entertainment team to manage the design, development, and delivery of Entertainment projects.  Establishes overall project technical strategy, generating all necessary plans to deliver project technical scope within schedule and budget constraints with the highest levels of safety and show quality. Actively leads the technical team throughout the lifecycle of the project, to include internal Entertainment technical team members and third-party vendors.  Manages assigned personnel and communicates successfully within the department and to leadership.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • PROJECT EXECUTION & HANDOFF
    • Leads technical team to oversee completion of work by vendors or internal partners (horticulture, sign shop, figure finish, tech services, security, UO works, rev ops, park ops, EHS) as required to meet deadlines and/or reduce out-of-show times.  Quickly identifies issues, providing resolution when possible, and/or appropriately escalating issues to ensure successful completion.
    • Leads the team for appropriate vendor management throughout the life cycle of the project.
    • Establishes technical operation and venue maintenance strategy.  Leads team to deliver all necessary project operational and maintenance documentation at the commissioning of the project.
  • PROJECT PLANNING
    • Responsible for establishing and driving the technical vision necessary to deliver project technical scope within the approved budget and schedule, maintaining the highest level of safety in accordance with Universal Specifications, accepted manufacturing processes, and local standards.  Generates all necessary strategy and plans to ensure successful completion.
    • Establishes contracting strategy in coordination with the Production Manager, to include identification of qualified vendors. 
    • Ensures the completion of all contracts to include authoring technical scopes of work in coordination with Entertainment contracting team, production manager, project engineer, and third-party vendors.  Facilitates approval from Universal Engineering.
  • PERSONNEL MANAGEMENT
    • Responsible for the appropriate staffing of all assigned entertainment projects to include identifying staffing requirements, interviewing, and selecting candidates in coordination with the Entertainment Project’s Production leadership and with Technical Entertainment executive leadership.
    • Provides leadership to all assigned team members providing project direction, coordination, and instruction. 
    • Responsible for ensuring that assigned team members maintain compliance with all policies and procedures as defined by the Entertainment, Universal Orlando Resort, and NBC Universal.
    • Responsible for providing timely feedback on personnel performance and discipline matters.
  • COORDINATION & COMMUNICATION
    • Coordinates with Project team to include Project Producer, Production Manager, Design Manager, Technical Managers, Project Engineers, and all other team members who have overlaps with technical scope.
    • Responsible for effectively communicating any and all necessary information which pertains to assigned projects to Entertainment Executive leadership as well as necessary parties outside the Entertainment Department.  Generates necessary reports and schedules to indicate the health and status of assigned projects.
    • Coordinates with internal and external partners, team members, guests, and outside vendors as necessary to support completion of capital, marquee, and other assigned projects, representing Entertainment interests.   Such partners may include, but are not limited to, all Entertainment Technical disciplines, Entertainment Events, Entertainment Production, Entertainment Art & Design, Entertainment Operations, UO Events Management, UO Tech Services, UO Rev Ops, UO PR & Marketing, UO Facilities, UO Attractions Operations, EHS, and Universal Creative.
  • Understands and actively participates in Environmental, Health & Safety responsibilities by following established UO policy, procedures, training and team member involvement activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION: 

  • Bachelor’s degree is required (entertainment or technical field preferred).
  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience. 

EXPERIENCE: 

  • 9+ years demonstrated project experience in a theme park setting required (technical focus preferred).
  • 3+ years of supervisory experience required.
  • Strong preference for experience with Technical Direction of live show or entertainment venues.
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

  • Supervisory and contract/vendor management experience is preferred.
  • Ability to work at night with occasional weekend and holidays as project schedule requires.
  • Knowledge, Skills, or Ability in budgeting, scheduling, permitting, show control programming, writing contract scopes, applying specifications/standards, and technical writing is preferred.
  • Experience with turnkey projects, specifically within the entertainment/theme park industry.
  • Practical experience in component selection and detailed design within Entertainment, Show, Scenic or Attractions.
  • Excellent mathematical and analytical reasoning skills with knowledge of Auto-CADD and computer modeling.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, etc.).
  • Firsthand knowledge of General Performance specifications, best industry practices, local AHJ standards and code compliance.
  • Experience and openness to a multilingual and multicultural work environment.
