Job Title: Wig Crew I – SFX Hair
JOB SUMMARY:
Responsible for styling/restyling, cleaning, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing wigs and related hair costume pieces with a wide variety of styles, including those with custom foundations, based on approved style guides and parameters for all venues, special events or seasonal events (also known as Marquee Events) throughout UO (including Epic). Works on additional or developmental projects as directed by the Wig and Makeup Leadership team. Necessary skills include cutting, cleaning, ventilating, and styling of wigs with knowledge of all materials and supplies used in the maintenance of theatrical wigs.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Styles, maintains, and replicates wigs and hair pieces with a variety of hair types, including synthetic, human, NFT, and braiding hair. Steam sets wigs to control or reset hair direction to achieve long-lasting styles. Styles wigs using a wide range of braiding styles, curling techniques, and period-accurate styling techniques such as updos, finger waves, chignons, and pompadours. Executes advanced blocking skills, including the ability to custom stretch and shape, ensuring precise fit and proper sizing for wigs or hairpieces.
- Troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains wigs, hair pieces, facial hair pieces, and cap foundations, using specialized materials such as monofilament threads, lace, netting, and elastic. Repairs and maintains full lace wig caps and partial lace fronts with expert understanding of their construction and durability while maintaining their quality over time. Restore the integrity, structure, and functionality of wig caps for wear and comfort. Strategically add or remove additional wefts to wigs to enhance volume and wig density as needed. Uses appropriate ventilation and sewing techniques when necessary.
- Washes wigs and hair pieces with a wide variety of styles, including those with custom foundations, including under structures made of foam, articulated foam, hair donuts, metal cages, boning, horsehair, snaps, and zip ties. Restyling wigs to ensure they retain their shape, texture, and appearance between styling sessions.
- Applies and removes wigs and lace pieces utilizing techniques that involve the use of adhesives, including the precise gluing down of lace front wigs. Instructs and assists performers with hair prep and wig applications, including securing and adjusting the fit of the wig, and securing with pins.
- Works closely with the Management team to maintain appropriate looks and follow IP requirements. Monitors inventory for wear and tear and asks for replacements as needed. Maintains equipment, supplies, and the cleanliness of the workstation.
- Understands and actively participates in Environmental, Health & Safety responsibilities by following established UO policy, procedures, training and team member involvement activities.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION:
- Certificate in hair styling/cosmetology preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
- 3+ years’ experience with wig styling, cleaning maintenance; theatrical wig experience preferred.
- Or equivalent combination of education and experience.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
- SFX Wig #2 and Ventilating level skills experience helpful. Expertise of SFX Wig #1 and Ventilating.
- Working with other materials needed to enhance theatrical design and create advanced cosmetic effects as well as pieces that management deem appropriate to the skill level.
- Proficient experience in wig styling, cutting, blocking, and maintenance.
- Ability to swiftly and effectively execute techniques with speed and accuracy.
- Ability to troubleshoot and solve problems with minimal guidance when restyling intricate designs.
- Proficient in a wide range of braid styles, including, but not limited to, French, Dutch, Waterfall, Fishtail, Cornrows, Ladder Lace, as well as 4-strand and 5-strand braids, with the ability to customize each technique for diverse looks.
- Skilled in altering wig textures to create a versatile base for customization.
- Ability to work with hairpieces that involve more complex craftsmanship, such as adding beads, excess hair, or other embellishments.
- Experience with ventilating is helpful.
- Knowledge of related products (wigs, cleaning, color products, tools, materials).
- Ability to perform all job responsibilities listed in Wig Crew – II and Wig-SFX Ventilator, Prosthetic Pieces.
- Independent, self-starter.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Ability to teach hair techniques to others as necessary.
- Good organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.

Work on additional or developmental projects as directed by Wig and Makeup Leadership team. Necessary skills include, cutting, cleaning, styling of wigs, knowledge of all materials and supplies used in the maintenance of theatrical wigs.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Style, maintain and preserve wigs, hairpieces and lace pieces including brushing, combing, straightening, and detangling techniques to ensure wigs retain their shape, texture, and appearance between styling sessions. Follows pre-set styling guidelines and restyles wigs as assigned using a range of tools and style techniques, including curling, roller setting, waving, steaming, straightening, creating three-strand braids, cutting, thinning, texturizing and executing updos.
- Applies, instructs and assists performers with hair prep and wig applications. Apply and remove lace hair pieces, along with cleaning and restyling. Apply facial hair pieces such as eyebrows, beards and mustaches as well as applying hair to masks and prosthetic foam pieces. Provides guidance to performers on proper wig application and hair prep, ensuring a secure fit, including assisting with the application process, adjusting fit, and securing the wig with pins.
- Wash and sanitize wigs and hair pieces with techniques tailored to specific wig types to remove buildup and maintain integrity of the wig. Selects appropriate cleansing products based on hair texture. Dries wigs with proper technique based on wig construction.
- Maintain equipment, supplies and cleanliness of workstation and area. Work closely with the Management team to maintain appropriate looks and follow IP requirements. Monitor wig inventory for wear and tear and ask for replacements as needed.
- Understands and actively participates in Environmental, Health & Safety responsibilities by following established UO policy, procedures, training and team member involvement activities.

- Knowledge of machine-tied lace wigs, hand-tied wigs, wefted wigs, lace fronts, hard fronts, and silicone-punched partings.
- Experience in wig washing and drying techniques tailored to specific wig types.
- Knowledge of related products (wigs, cleaning, color products, tools).
- Independent, self-starter.
