JOB SUMMARY:

Responsible for costume and wardrobe construction, repairs, alterations, and fittings for characters, shows, daily wardrobe needs, and new projects at Universal Kids Resort (UKR). Maintains direct and thorough communication with Wardrobe & Costuming leadership of any necessary information, projects status updates, issues and/or milestones. Ensures the integrity and creative intent of each new costume is aligned with Universal Destinations & Experiences (UDX) standards.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs basic alterations and repairs in alignment with UDX standards. Irons, steams, washes, and prepares fabric as needed for projects. Effectively communicates, tracks, and reports on successes or failures of costume repairs and longevity procedures. Performs quick repairs for costumes as needed during technical rehearsals and live performances.
  • Assists in the fabrication of new pieces by cutting pieces from patterns, with knowledge of grain, knap, and fabric-saving techniques. Demonstrates proficiency in working with zipper repair/ replacement, closures, hems and basic alteration/repairs by hand or by mechanical industrial machine to skillfully construct and/or repair costumes.
  • Assists with fittings, makes basic costume adjustments, and notates changes per Wardrobe & Costuming leadership authorization. Skillfully alters costumes to align with fitting notes and ensures their stage readiness in alignment with UDX costume quality, standards and Performer safety.
  • Maintains equipment and supplies and communicates needs to leadership. Assists in cleanliness and organization of the work areas and ensures that all containers are labeled and stored according to EHS standards and performs accurate logging of daily work product.
  • Assists with setting up and implementing procedures for new shows, events, and characters to facilitate the daily maintenance.
  • Understand and actively participate in Environmental, Health & Safety responsibilities by following established UDX policy, procedures, training, and team member involvement activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Some work may require contact with latex, wool, fur, and other allergens.
  • Must be able to work a flexible and varied schedule based on business demands.
  • Must be able to work well under pressure and adapt to changes quickly.

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities (KSAs) required.

  • Demonstrated experience and proficiency in, but not limited to, machine sewing (industrial single needle, industrial overlock, industrial walking foot, domestic machines), hand sewing, ironing and pressing.
  • Advanced sewing skills by hand or machine and millinery are a plus.
  • Strong communication skills, highly organized, and able to prioritize numerous tasks.

  • Consistent attendance is a job requirement.

EDUCATION:

  • Technical, Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Costume or Fashion Construction/Technology is strongly preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

  • 2+ years of costume construction and maintenance experience and working with patterns is required; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
