JOB SUMMARY:

Be a Safety Control System expert with knowledge of controls, electrical schematics, software experience, UO’s company safety philosophy, policies, standards, procedures and cross-functional engineering skills. Provide safety signoff for Venue systems, equipment, components, ECNs, and TDs in compliance with UO Engineering Guidelines. Act as a liaison between Operations and Technical Services to ensure safety issues are addressed, mitigated and corrective actions are followed. Support downtime recovery efforts by technical problem identification, performing System Risk Assessment and Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA's) and ensure that Engineering Team Members understand the "lessons learned".

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • UO Safety Control Expert will provide leadership and direction by:
    • Enforcing UO’s company safety philosophy, policies, standards and procedures including Creative’s Standards, ASTM F24 Committee Guidelines and regulations for all hardware and software control related systems company wide.
    • Reviewing and providing feedback on Creative design standards and specifications for new projects.
    • Participating in all control equipment development for existing and new Venues (Creative) to recommend product specifications, process requirements, layout complexity, maintainability, reliability and system security.
    • Providing safety signoff for Venues’ controls/software systems, equipment, components, ECNs and TDs in compliance with UO Engineering Guidelines.
    • Assisting in the development and revision of department policies and procedures as they relate to safety, configuration control, and other concerns.
  • Serve as Safety Control System expert for all efforts involving new projects for UO Parks and Creative endeavors by:
    • Being a liaison between Operations, Technical Services and Creative to ensure safety issues are addressed, mitigated and corrected on new projects.
    • Participating in control hardware and software design from concept to opening of new Venues by providing input to protect the parks’ interests.
    • Providing technical oversight and Management for the Controls team on new projects, to include controls engineers and technicians from Tech Services, vendors and 3rd party contractors.
    • Reviewing safety design documents for new Venues to help ensure the safety of new ride systems.
    • Supporting Creative during the commissioning and opening of new Venues and/or modification to existing Venues.
  • Work cross-functionally with other UO Departments and across other Engineering disciplines to support their development of software, hardware, controls, equipment or instrumentation for use in other departments and/or use in other areas of UO. These developments must follow UO’s company safety philosophy, policies, standards, procedures and must be proper archived.
  • Coordinate assigned Engineering activities between vendors, ride supervisors, ride managers and technicians. Provide project status of assigned task list items to the appropriate ride manager and Engineering manager on a regular basis.
  • Prepare and review equipment specifications and perform technical evaluation of vendor products and services. Oversee mock-up, prototype, installation, test and adjustment of show and ride systems to ensure compliance with contractual specifications.
  • Act as mentor for controls and software Engineers to help with their growth in Engineering. Recommend training programs for new hires and associate engineers to increase their development.
  • Understands and actively participates in Environmental, Health & Safety responsibilities by following established UO policy, procedures, training and team member involvement activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION:

  • Required – Bachelor’s Degree: Bachelor’s Degree from a four-year college or university in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology or related fields.
  • Desired - Master’s Degree: Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology or related fields; or any equivalent combination of related training and experience.

EXPERIENCE:

  • 10+ years demonstrated experience in electrical engineering, control system design and installation utilizing PLC’s, ladder logic, variable frequency drives and servo control systems, process and/or machine safety, field experience with Theme Park technical environment and process control fault analysis/isolation experience required.
  • 3 years as Safety Controls Engineer, providing technical safety aspects for the control systems, networks, and is one of UO’s safety control’s experts for UO’s Venues.
  • Has performed Venue downtime recovery by technical problem identification, performing System Risk Assessment, FMEA, and ensure the safety systems are in place.
  • Experience with safety control equipment to approve product specifications, process requirements, and layout for Venues.
  • Has reviewed and approved safety of control systems for UO’s Venues. Has provided technical input for Creative on existing and new Venues from initial concept through initial operation.
  • equivalent combination of education and experience.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

  • PLC controls programming, maintenance, and troubleshooting; required.
  • AC/DC Drives (motor controls) Configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting; required.
  • TUV - Functional Safety Engineer certification or Machine Safety Expert certification; required.
  • Cisco networking and wireless network certifications; preferred.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Required

  • Strong analytical skills to perform engineering calculations for design, analysis, test and implementation of electrical and control systems.
  • High Level of knowledge and experience in the design of safety critical systems, ISO 13849-1, ISO 13849-2, ISO12100 standards, IEC60204-1, IEC62061, PL and SIL safety levels, and UL 508A, NEC, ASTM, ASTM F24 Standards and UO’s Safety Standards.
  • Experience in the design of safety critical systems.
  • A strong background in servo controls as applied for hydraulic, pneumatic, and electromotive motion control systems is required.
  • High Level of knowledge of Allen Bradley PLC Systems, "C", Visual Basic, and other software platforms. Experience utilizing PLC-5, SLC-500, ControlLogix, CompactLogix, PanelBuilder 1400E, PanelBuilder32, RSView 32, RSLinx, RSLogix (5 thru 5000), RSStudio 5000, RSNetworx, Allen-Bradley PLC, and AC/DC motor control systems.
  • Ability to perform engineering calculations commensurate with Baccalaureate training in electrical, electronic and software engineering.
  • Experience with generation of control system specifications, acceptance test procedures, technical compliance, system risk assessments and failure analysis.
  • Proven application experience utilizing the following products and networks. 1305, 1336, 750 series AB variable frequency drives, Data Highway Plus, Remote I/O, ControlNet, DeviceNet, Ethernet, DMX and SMPTE.
  • Experience in Ride and Show control systems in the theme park industry.

Desired

  • Experience with Siemens Safety PLC’s, Drives, and I/O.
  • Experience with Anitech, Gilderfluke, and Weigl show system controllers.
