Graduate Assistant - Office of Residence Life

Overview:
The RMU Office of Residence Life (ORL) is recruiting a graduate assistant (GA) to serve as an on-call team member / program assistant. The GA will live in an on-campus apartment to serve as a resource for residential students, serving in the on-call duty rotation for the ORL. The GA will also work closely with ORL staff and community advisors (CAs) to develop an environment in the residence hall community that is conducive to academic success, intellectual growth, and social development. This is an excellent opportunity for graduate students interested in student affairs, higher education, or mental health to gain experience with mental health response, crisis management, and wellness promotion practices in an on-campus setting. Additionally, this position provides an opportunity for building skills in leadership, student engagement, and community outreach. The ideal candidate needs to be a collaborative, student‐oriented, and reliable individual. Extensive training will be provided prior to beginning work. A successful candidate will begin their contract June 1 and may be able to continue in their position following an annual performance review, as long as they are still enrolled in a graduate program.
Responsibilities:
On-Call Team Member Duties Provide evening, weekend, and overnight shift on-call for residence life on a rotating basis (1 designated weekday per week, approximately 1 weekend Friday-Sunday every 6 weeks or 2-3 weekends per semester). Consult with appropriate staff (residence life/counseling center) to determine next steps following an incident. Coordinate emergency services with the university police, residence life, and counseling center, as needed. Complete required paperwork for the counseling center and/or residence life following an incident with a resident student. Have a working knowledge of the services that are available on campus and provide information to students, as needed. Maintain confidentiality in accordance with legal and ethical standards. Other duties as assigned Program Assistant Duties (20 hours per week) Supervise an area Community Advisor (CA) staff of approximately 4 students. Assist with the planning and implementation of weekly area meetings with CA staff. Hold individual meetings with area CA staff to discuss individual progress and development, and to provide CAs with the opportunity to exchange views about the residence life program, as needed. Attend weekly residence life professional staff meetings. Submit requested reports to the Office of Residence Life and other university offices as necessary and appropriate. Assist in campus-wide implementation of programming initiatives Identify and develop collaborative, working relationships with faculty, campus partners, and community stakeholders in development of the communities you work with. Know residents in one’s area, maintain all records essential to working with residents, and provide appropriate communication pertaining to residents. Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications Currently enrolled in a related graduate program. Evening, overnight shift, and weekend work required. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Strong organizational, administrative, customer service, and leadership skills, including the ability to receive and delegate tasks; ability to work independently and as part of a team. Excellent coping skills and ability to handle stressful situations. Ability to respond to the complex nature of student needs in a professional and timely manner in order to quickly recognize, assess, and determine appropriate plan of action in a crisis situation. Demonstrated understanding of unique needs of diverse student populations and an ability to respond in culturally sensitive ways. Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation Preferred Qualifications Experience working around crisis situations, mental health, and/or wellness. Experience working with survivors of sexual assault. Experience working in residence life Compensation Monthly $500 per month. Furnished on-campus apartment (valued at $1500 per month). Includes utilities, Internet, kitchen, private bathroom, laundry; pet friendly. RMU staff parking pass. RMU Recreation Center membership.
