The Therapist, reporting to the Director of the Counseling Center, is responsible for providing individual and group counseling to students and conducting crisis assessment and intervention. This includes making appropriate referrals to additional resources and offering consultation to faculty, staff, students, and parents. This role will also contribute to campus-wide wellness initiatives and serve in the on-call crisis rotation, as needed. The ideal candidate for this position will hold strong ethics regarding client confidentiality, serve as a generalist to help students who present with a wide range of clinical presentations, and understand the importance of being flexible to best serve the campus community. The Robert Morris University Counseling Center is committed to addressing the mental health needs of students via clinical services and psychoeducational programming, in order to increase resilience and help students to develop strategies for success. The Counseling Center will be a strategic partner with Robert Morris University departments, offices, and student organizations to provide a holistic and complete experience that honors all students. Responsibilities:
- Provide short-term individual and group counseling to students, including crisis assessment and intervention.
- Conduct intake assessments, identify clinical needs, develop case formulations, and make treatment recommendations.
- Develop and implement appropriate discharge or transfer planning, including necessary follow-up with students and relevant parties.
- Effectively engage and retain students in treatment and manage caseload efficiently.
- Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential clinical documentation and case files.
- Make appropriate referrals to on-and off-campus providers and consult with other professionals or agencies as needed.
- Provide outreach, training, and workshops on mental health and wellness topics for student groups, faculty, staff, and other campus constituents.
- Serve as a consultant and resource for faculty and staff regarding the mental health needs of individual students or broader campus concerns.
- Collaborate and provide support to various campus wellness initiatives and University-wide events.
- Foster a supportive, inclusive, and collaborative environment working with diverse student populations, faculty, staff, families, and community partners.
- Maintain professionalism and model appropriate clinical and workplace behaviors.
- Participate in after-hours crisis on-call rotation and be available by phone/email outside typical business hours as needed.
- Occasionally drive on behalf of the University (ex: meeting a student at the hospital following a crisis).
- Work evenings or weekends, as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Master's or Doctorate Degree in counseling, social work, psychology, or a related field from an accredited college or university is required.
- 2+ years of post-graduate degree experience in a related field is strongly preferred. Experience working with college students, suicidal clients, diverse populations, clinical supervision, and/or community outreach is strongly preferred.
- Maintain professional licensure and stay current with evolving practices, contemporary ideas, and trends through ongoing training and development.
- Demonstrated knowledge of psychological and counseling theories, principles, and techniques, as well as the social and psychological foundations of dysfunctional behavior. Strong clinical skills, including critical thinking, sound judgment, crisis assessment, and decision-making in high-stress situations.
- Proven experience in providing mental health counseling and crisis intervention.
- Effective coping skills and the ability to manage a wide range of mental health concerns and stressful scenarios with calm and professionalism.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
- Demonstrated commitment to multiculturalism and diversity, with experience in multicultural counseling and working with diverse populations.
- Uphold confidentiality in accordance with ethical, legal, and professional standards, including adherence to FERPA, HIPAA, and relevant codes of ethics.
- Possess characteristics that inspire respect, trust, and confidence in clients and colleagues.
- Strong sense of purpose and a genuine desire to positively impact others' lives.
- Ability to troubleshoot, navigate challenges, receive feedback, and seek guidance when necessary.
- Dependable, adaptable, and composed in high-pressure environments.
- Willingness and ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as needed
- Reliable transportation for University-related travel, when required
- Demonstrated proficiency with, or willingness to learn, office and teletherapy support tools and electronic health record systems (e.g., Titanium Schedule, Google Meet, Zoom, Microsoft Teams), and integrate these technologies into the effective delivery of mental health services.
- Independent clinical license or eligibility for licensure from the State of Pennsylvania is preferred within one year of hire date (ex: LCSW, LMFT, LPC, licensed psychologist). If coming from out of state, must be eligible to transfer license to PA within six months. Must maintain clinical licensure throughout the duration of employment. Valid driver's license is required.
